WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM FALLS IN FINAL SECONDS AT BELMONT

NASHVILLE– Heather Butler scored 14 second-half points and finished Saturday afternoon’s game at the Curb Event Center on the Belmont campus with 17 points. Jasmine Newsome also scored 17 points, while senior Rickiesha Bryant scored 10 points.
One of Butler’s three 3-pointers in the game, with 21 seconds left, knotted the score at 56-56.
However, Belmont’s Katie Brooks hit a jumper with 2.5 seconds remaining in the game to give the host Lady Bruins a 58-56 victory over The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team.
Freshman Katie Schubert inbounded the ball to Bryant, but the senior’s shot drew iron at the buzzer and Belmont grabbed the win.
“We got it to who we thought would be open and she took the shot that we wanted and it just didn’t go down,” UT Martin head women’s basketball coach Kevin McMillan said.
The game was tied eight times and the lead changed hands seven times.
UT artin led by as many as 10 points with 16:02 to play in the second half, but Belmont knotted the game at 45-45 with just over nine minutes to play. The game was also tied at 47-, 49- and 50-all. Belmont was led by Jordyn Luffman with 12 points. Molly Ernst tossed in 11 points and Brooks added 10 points. Ernst scored all 11 points in the second half.
With five minutes left in the game, UT Martin led 52-50.
“The game was in Butler and Newsome’s hands in the last five minutes and they just didn’t make the shots to take over the game,” McMillan said.
Down the stretch Butler and Newsome only hit a free throw each and Butler hit the 3-pointer to tie the game at 56-all.
With the setback, the Skyhawks fall to 7-11 overall and 2-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference standings. The Skyhawks will return to action Wednesday, Jan. 16, when they play Southeast Missouri State at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Notes:
- Junior Heather Butler extended her games with at least one 3-pointer to 64. Butler is closing in on the NCAA Division I record for most games (69) with a 3-pointer made. She also extended her streak of double-digit scoring games to 81.
- Katie Schubert’s 10 first-half rebounds are the most by a single player since Darnisha Lyles had 11 in the second half on Jan. 4, 2010, at Murray State.
