RODEO TEAM TAKES SECOND AT TROY; GOES INTO BREAK ATOP STANDINGS

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s rodeo team finished second in the recent Troy University rodeo, but still maintained its lead in the Ozark Region and in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) national standings.
With 500 points, UT Martin finished second in the Troy rodeo. East Mississippi Community College won the rodeo with 625 points, while Missouri Valley College was third with 440 points and West Alabama was fourth with 240 points.
“We are competing real well right now, but we must stay focused and continue to take advantage of our opportunities,” UT Martin head rodeo coach John Luthi said.
Ty Hugheston opened the rodeo winning the saddle bronc riding. He won the first go and the average.
Tyler Waltz made the best of the bareback riding. He split first and second in the first go and he was third in the average.
In the calf roping, Lane Mitchell was sixth in the first go. He was third in the short go and fourth in the average. Ben Walker split third and fourth in the first go. He was second in the short go and second in the average.
In the steer wrestling Jordan Thrasher split first and second in the first go. He was fifth in the short go and fifth in the average. John Alley was sixth in the short go and sixth in the average.
In team roping, the UT Martin cowboys teamed up West Alabama and Troy to score points. Will Lummus teamed with West Alabama’s Taylor White and split third and fourth in the first go. The pair was sixth in the average.
Walker teamed up with Troy’s Zack Mabry and finished second in the short go and third in the average.
“A lot depends on the draw,” Luthi said. “That’s why we have to take advantage of the opportunities.
On the women’s side, UT Martin finished fourth with 110 points. Southern Arkansas was first with 415 points, while Missouri Valley College was second with 310 points. Murray State was third with 250 points.
In the goat tying, Micayla Gray split fifth and sixth in the first go. She split sixth in the average.
Natalie Fletcher worked the breakaway roping and claimed first in the short go and fifth in the average.
It was I the barrel racing where the UT Martin women picked up most of their points. Mary Francis Gorsuch was fourth in the first go. Katie Brown was sixth in the short go and Nealy Dalton claimed fifth in the first go, third in the short go and third in the average.
The UT Martin rodeo team will be idle until after the first of the year.
