MOREHEAD, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team battled but fell 3-1 to top seed Morehead State (12-25, 20-25, 8-25) this evening in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinals held at Wetherby Gym.

Sophomore Jackie Harter’s four kills led the Skyhawk offense tonight, while Emily Keaton and Allie Whimpey each accounted for three kills. Amanda Crask handed out 11 assists for UT Martin, who concludes the 2012 campaign with a 10-21 overall record.

In the final match of her career, senior libero Kasey Elswick tallied a team-high 11 digs. A three-time All-OVC honoree, Elswick wraps up her storied career as the OVC’s all-time digs leader with 2,606 in four seasons.

The Skyhawks jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first set but Morehead State then went on a 10-0 run until a kill by Allie Whimpey brought UT Martin back within five points. An assisted block by Harter and Keaton made the score 16-9. However, the Eagles responded by scoring seven of the next eight points on their way to claiming the first set.

UT Martin fell behind in the second set but eventually clawed back to put itself in position to even the match. Morehead State led 4-1 but a kill by Keaton ignited a 3-1 Skyhawk run. After a Shelby Hoskins kill made the score at 8-5, the Eagles scored eight unanswered but UT Martin kept fighting. The Skyhawks reeled off 10 of the next 11 points, getting kills by Whimpey, Crask and Keaton in that span. Two straight kills by Harter, followed by an assisted block by Harter and Keaton tied the set at 18-all, but Morehead State soon scored five consecutive points. UT Martin got within four at 23-19 and 24-20 before the Eagles won the set.

In the third set, the Skyhawks took advantage of three early errors by Morehead State, trailing 5-3. The Eagles then scored a dozen straight points and although Harter and Keaton would record kills from that point on, Morehead State eventually concluded the set by scoring the final four points.
