WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM OPENS HOME SLATE WITH VICTORY OVER ARKANSAS STATE
November 12, 2012
MARTIN, Tenn. – UT Martin head women’s basketball coach Kevin McMillan has been known to play Blokus on the computer on those long bus rides back to campus.
McMillan used some of what he learned playing that computer game Monday night as his Skyhawks opened their 2012-13 home season in the friendly confines of the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center with a 72-62 victory over Arkansas State.
Junior guards Jasmine Newsome and Heather Butler led the Skyhawks with 17 and 14 points respectively. It was the backcourt duo that led the Skyhawks in scoring at Northwestern Friday night.
“I decided we would get some balance tonight,” McMillan said. “I was trying to take the heat off Newsome and Butler.”
Much to his liking, his team responded against the Red Wolves. Cortrice “Big Baby” Golden poured in 11 points, while Sydney Vanlandingham tossed in 10 points. Katie Schubert only played 17 minutes and took four shots from the field but she knocked down a pair of 3-pointers.
The game was tied six times in the first half before Newsome made a 3-pointer with 57 seconds remaining in the first half. The Skyhawks never relinquished the lead. In fact, Ashley Bassett-Smith’s layup with 7:25 to play in the game gave the Skyhawks a 12 point advantage, 63-51.
Arkansas State was led by Jane Morrill with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Ashley Olvera scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
The Skyhawks are now 1-1 on the season, while Arkansas State falls to 0-2.
The Skyhawks return to action Nov. 16 when they open a three-game stint in the Wahine Classic in Hawaii. The Skyhawks will play Hawaii, Baylor and Stanford.
“We want to enjoy the trip, but we want to get some business done,” Butler said. “We are going to play the best teams in the country such as Baylor and Stanford.”
The Skyhawks will play their first 10 games of the season against teams from 10 different conferences. “They are 10 of the best conferences in the country,” McMillan said. “If we are fortunate to make it back to the NCAA, we will have seen all different things.”
NOTES
MOVING ON UP --Junior guards Heather Butler and Jasmine Newsome both moved up on UT Martin’s all-time scoring list with their effort tonight against Arkansas State. Butler moved up to No. 5 with 14 points, while Newsome moved into the top 10 with her 17 points.
MUCH IMPROVED --The Skyhawks were 4-for-11 from the free throw line this past Friday night against host Northwestern. The Skyhawks made 17-of-20 from the charity stripe tonight against Arkansas State, making their first eight attempts before missing.
NON-CONFERENCE SLATE –The Skyhawks are truly playing a non-conference season before they open Ohio Valley Conference play on Dec. 29. The Skyhawks opened the season against Northwestern from the Big Ten Conference and played Arkansas State, from the Sun Belt Conference tonight. Each of the Skyhawks’ first 10 opponents represent a different conference. The Skyhawks will play foes from 12 different conferences before the OVC slate gets under way.
