MARTIN, Tenn. – It was announced today that The University of Tennessee at Martin’s Kasey Elswick was one of six NCAA Division-I recipients to be named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 volleyball first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Elswick joins players from Wake Forest, Chattanooga, High Point, North Carolina State and Duke on the District 3 first team. Overall, the 54 national first team recipients from the eight districts advance to the Academic All-American ballot that will be released later this month. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative Grade Point Average (on a 4.0 scale) at her current institution.

An accounting major with an impressive 3.97 GPA, Elswick is a three-time Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient. She was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District first team last season while she also claiming an OVC Medal of Honor in 2010 for her perfect 4.0 GPA.

On the court, Elswick has been nothing short of remarkable. Last month, she became the OVC’s all-time digs leader and currently has 2,567 career digs – 113 more than second place on the OVC list and 1,166 more than any other Skyhawk in program history. The Louisville, Ky. native currently leads the OVC in digs per set (5.70) and is 15th in the nation in that category.

A two-time OVC Defensive Player of the Year, Elswick has scooped up at least 25 digs on nine different occasions this season, eclipsing the 40-dig mark twice. Overall, she accounts for nine of UT Martin’s top 10 single-match dig performances, including a program-best 46 in four sets at Eastern Kentucky last year. Last season, her 852 digs shattered an NCAA single-season mark on her way to an AVCA honorable mention All-American award.

“I am really proud of the way Kasey is finishing up her career,” Skyhawk head coach Darrin McClure said. “She has been very solid academically all throughout her time here at UT Martin and as a finance major that’s not always easy. She is the perfect example of the word ‘student-athlete’ – she excels in the classroom and on the court.”

Elswick will be playing in her final match at Skyhawk Fieldhouse this Saturday, Nov. 10 against Jacksonville State at 2 p.m. She will be recognized for her career contributions before the match as part of Senior Day festivities.
