BASEBALL TEAM CONCLUDES ANNUAL SOYBEAN SERIES
October 30, 2012
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team wrapped up its annual intersquad scrimmages last weekend, as the Blue team won two straight games before the third and final game of the annual Soybean Series ended in a tie at Skyhawk Field.
Game 1 of the series was played on Monday, Oct. 22, with the Blue team claiming a 7-3 victory. The Blue squad was led offensively by Jake Deason (2-for-2, two RBI) and Kenny King (2-for-4, RBI), while John Skubina picked up the mound victory, tossing 3.2 innings.
Because of inclement weather, the next two games in the best-of-three series was pushed back to a pair of shortened games on Saturday, Oct. 27.
The White team held a lead for the majority of the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader before the Blue team stormed back to win 4-3 in dramatic fashion.
Byron Johann singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth for the Blue team, who trailed 3-0 heading into the final frame. Two quick outs then followed, as the White team was one out away from evening the series. Deason was then hit by a pitch and Luis Paublini-Campos drew a walk to load the bases and bring up the tying run. King (2-for-3 in the game) then hit a two-run single and Matt Haynes followed that with a double that plated a pair of runs to end the contest.
In the nightcap of the doubleheader, each team battled from deficits to end in a 5-5 tie.
It was the White squad who performed a little comeback magic in the final game. Trailing 5-2 going into the bottom of the fifth, Drew Erie and Kyle Bargery drew walks to start the rally for the White team. Sonny Mastromatteo then laced a two-run double – his second of the game and third on the day – to make the score 5-4. The tying run then came around to score before the game was called.
Hunter Britcliffe tallied a pair of hits for the Blue team in Game 3. The best pitching performance of the day was by senior right-hander Alex Boshers, who has missed all of the fall with a toe injury. Making his first appearance of the fall, he struck out the side in his lone inning of work.
Defensively, Haynes also stood out at the hot corner. He made a diving snare to start a crucial 5-4-3 double play to end a rally for the White team during Saturday’s action.
The Skyhawks have now ended their fall season and will prepare for their 2013 season opener at Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 15-17.
