FASTEST WOMEN'S TEAM IN SCHOOL HISTORY LEAD CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS AT OVC CHAMPIONSHIPS

OXFORD, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin cross country teams were led by a pair of veterans at the Ohio Valley Conference championships, held at Oxford Lake Park and hosted by Jacksonville State University.

In the 5k course, the Skyhawk women’s squad turned in a total time of 1:37.08.36 (average time of 19:25.67), while the UT Martin men’s team finished with a total time of 2:16:09.50 (average time of 27:13.90) in the 8k. Eastern Kentucky swept both the men’s and women’s titles.

On the women’s side, Amanda Wardlaw paced the field with a final time of 18:44.04. Hannah Wolters registered a final time of 18:46.62, while Alexandra Stover was next to finish at 19:39.43. Samantha Hunt (19:51.22), Kaycee Grimes (20:07.04) and Kathryn Skaggs (20:20.99) ran in a tight pack, while Laura Wind and Emily Jones slotted back-to-back finishes with times of 21:02.33 and 21:03.22, respectively.

"On a certified and flat course, the top six ladies all had personal bests or were within five seconds of that to make the scoring five the fastest in UT Martin history," UT Martin head coach Gordon Sanders said. "We were only seven seconds from having all five scorers under 20 minutes in the same race - the other university milestone we were hoping to make happen."

Ryan Pett crossed the finish line first for the Skyhawk men, completing the course in 26:27.59. Justin Morgan also made short work of the course, finishing with a time of 26:35.83. Tallon Scott (26:56.93) was the next highest finisher, followed by Josiah Roberts (27:57.50) and Vance Pounders (28:11.65), who finished in back-to-back slots. Trevor Hancock (28:34.96), Mark Graubner (30:23.65) and Zach Phifer (30:57.47) rounded out the field for the UT Martin men’s squad.

"For the men, our first and second guys followed the ladies' example and came in with personal bests," Sanders said. "Ryan wobbled across the line in a time he predicted he would never get and was our first guy for only the second time in his career while our freshman Justin had a large improvement by his typical smart racing. That our No. 3 through No. 6 runners were almost 50 seconds short of their best was a peak performance I obviously misplanned. Instead of fighting with the three teams that finished within six seconds of each other we were not even in contention."

Wardlaw, Wolters and Pett will now advance to the NCAA Regionals in Tallahassee, Fla. on Nov. 9.
