October 22, 2012
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team picked up 3-0 and 6-0 victories in fall exhibition action against Mid-Continent University at Skyhawk Field on Saturday.
Overall, six Skyhawk pitchers combined for 14 innings of shutout baseball. As a staff, UT Martin allowed just two hits and fanned 18 batters on the afternoon.
Game 1 starter Dan Tobik went four strong innings, followed by two innings of relief by Carter Smith and one inning from Stu Jones. Sophomore left-hander Taylor “Bug” Cox started the nightcap and fired four innings, while Chris Ross (two innings) and Trevor Lundgrin (one inning) also made successful appearances.
“We pitched well,” Skyhawk head coach Bubba Cates said. “We didn’t create many problems and we pitched out of a few jams.”
Offensively, Hagen Nelson led UT Martin in the first game, collecting two hits (a single and a double). In the second game, Wade Collins slammed a two-run homer and a double to pace the offense. Matt Haynes also drove in two runs while freshman Kenny King hit a double and added a sacrifice fly.
“We did fine at the plate,” Cates said. “We had some quality at-bats and helped create a few runs off of walks.”
Cates was also impressed with the team’s defense in the doubleheader.
“Our maturity level amongst our positioned players is a lot better than it was last year,” Cates said. “We handled the ball very well.”
All in all, Cates was pleased with the team’s performance and effort.
“We still have some things we need to do better but overall the day was a success,” Cates said.
