VOLLEYBALL TEAM FALLS IN THREE SETS AT EASTERN KENTUCKY

RICHMOND, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team struggled this evening at Eastern Kentucky, falling 3-0 (20-25, 12-25, 10-25) in Ohio Valley Conference action at McBrayer Arena.
Sophomore Emily Keaton led the Skyhawks in kills for the fourth straight match, slamming down seven kills to go along with a .227 attack percentage in 22 attempts. Amanda Crask tallied 16 assists while Kasey Elswick’s 13 digs were a team-high for UT Martin (8-15, 4-5 OVC).
A kill by Jackie Harter gave the Skyhawks a 5-4 lead in the first set, but Eastern Kentucky answered with a 9-0 run. Back-to-back kills by Keaton pulled UT Martin within six at 18-12 and moments later, the Skyhawks reeled off three unanswered points to pull within 21-18. Consecutive kills by Shelby Hoskins and Keaton kept the margin at three late (23-20) before the Colonels ended the set with two straight points.Keaton’s four kills and Elswick’s six digs paced UT Martin in the first set.
The Skyhawks only trailed 4-3 to start the second set but soon found themselves trailing 10-4 before a kill by Allie Whimpey ended the drought. Midway through the set, Eastern Kentucky went on an 8-2 run to lead 22-10 before another Whimpey kill got the Skyhawks back on track. However, the Colonels closed out the set soon thereafter.
UT Martin led early in the third set and got within one (4-3) off an assisted block by Harter and Dallas Zimmerman. A kill by Keaton made the score 5-4 but the Colonels accounted for six straight points. After an Eastern Kentucky service error, the Colonels went on a 7-1 run before a Taylor Simons kill made the score 18-7. A kill by Crask soon followed but Eastern Kentucky scored five consecutive points on its way to the win.
The Skyhawks return to the court tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 20) at Morehead State. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. Central time.
