CHARLESTON, Ill. – Five different Skyhawks tallied a goal this afternoon in The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team’s 5-1 triumph over Eastern Illinois at Lakeside Field. The Skyhawks improve to 6-4-3 on the season and have not lost since Sept. 7.

Tonight’s result was the first time that UT Martin had scored five goals in an OVC match since a 7-1 win against Morehead State on Oct. 2, 2005. It also propelled the Skyhawks into first place in the OVC standings for the first time all season and was UT Martin's first win in Charleston in the history of the program (was previously 0-8).

Reigning OVC Offensive Player of the Week Hannah McGowen got the Skyhawks on the scoreboard early today, netting a goal in the 10th minute. Dominika Conc added a goal – the eventual game-winner – almost 10 minutes later to give UT Martin a 2-0 halftime lead. Midori Sera and Saphyra Coombs-James then scored less than two minutes apart from each other to open the second half. After an Eastern Illinois goal in the 64th minute, Abi Sanvee capped off the scoring with a goal in the 88th minute. Senior Kendyl Wilson also handed out two assists to take over the team lead in that category (five).

Sophomore Mariah Klenke (64:13) and redshirt junior Sarah Tompkins (25:47) split time in goal today. Klenke made four stops while Tompkins did not face a shot.

McGowen’s goal came at the 9:07 mark after Eastern Illinois goalkeeper Jessica Taldone deflected a cross with her hand. McGowen scooped up the loose ball rebound and scooted the ball past Taldone for her third goal of the season – all of which have come in the last two matches.

Klenke made a save at the 12:02 mark and the Skyhawk defense came away with a team save in the 14th minute to keep the score at 1-0.

Less than six minutes later, Conc found the back of the net for her third strike of the season and sixth of her young career. Wilson was credited with her first assist of the match on that play.

Klenke corralled another save a little over two minutes later. Soon thereafter, Coombs-James nearly gave UT Martin a three-goal advantage – firing a shot on goal and a ball that hit the post in the 24th minute.

Persistence paid off for Sera to start the second half of play. After sending a hard shot on goal that forced new Panther goalkeeper Brittany O’Dell to scramble for the save, Sera gained control of the rebound and found paydirt for her third goal of the season.

Klenke kept the scoring margin at 3-0 with her third save of the day at the 47:26 mark. Less than a minute later, Coombs-James took a cross from the right side by Wilson for a goal from five yards out to extend UT Martin’s advantage to four goals. It was Coombs-James’ fifth goal of the season, tying her with Wilson for the team lead in that category.

Klenke made one more stop at the 48:45 mark before Eastern Illinois got on the scoreboard in the 64th minute.

With 2:37 to go in regulation, Sanvee came up with her third goal of the season. The junior from Bartlett, Tenn. sent in a shot from the top of the box that slipped through O’Dell’s hands to make the score 5-1 – the game’s final margin.

The Skyhawks close out their short two-match road swing on Sunday, Oct. 7 when it plays at SIU Edwardsville at 1 p.m.
