TENNIS TEAM EARNS A PAIR OF DOUBLES FLIGHT CHAMPIONSHIPS AT AUSTIN PEAY FALL INVITATIONAL

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Two doubles flight championships against Ohio Valley Conference schools at the Austin Peay Fall Invitational highlighted another successful weekend for The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team.

“We got a good look at some of our OVC rivals this weekend,” UT Martin head coach Dennis Taylor said. “Eastern Kentucky and UT Martin were by far the best teams there. Judging from this tournament, I would say that Eastern Kentucky will be the team to beat this year.”

Katie McCall and Johanie Van Zyl were crowned victors in Flight Two doubles competition, while Anna Marie Herbold and Ivon Simic went a perfect 4-0 on their way to the Flight Three doubles title.

McCall and Van Zyl posted victories over Evansville’s Gaby Fifer and Emily Richardson (8-5) and Southeast Missouri’s Heather Robinson and Lauren Schaper (8-3) to advance to the finals. In the championship match, the Skyhawk tandem came away with an 8-3 victory over Eastern Kentucky’s Marcela Jimenez and Kristina Labeja.

Herbold and Simic downed Jovana Karac and Julie Covington from Austin Peay to start their run through the Flight Three title. UT Martin’s duo then defeated Carolina Barboza and Alex Crofford from Western Kentucky (8-6) as well as Southeast Missouri’s Jessica Courtnell and Melissa Martin (8-1). Herbold and Simic then posted an 8-3 win in the finals over Eastern Kentucky’s Amandine Faouzi and Carmen Rodriguez.

“Our doubles looked very solid this weekend, but we must improve our singles if we are going to finish in the top four of the conference,” Taylor said. “Our schedule for the rest of the fall and early spring will be extremely challenging but we must play tough opponents if we expect to be competitive at conference time.”

In singles play, senior Alice Laing went 2-1 in Flight Three singles action. She earned victories over Austin Peay’s Covington (6-2, 6-0) and SIU Edwardsville’s Amanda Miller (6-3, 6-2) before falling in a marathon 7-5, 1-6, 9-11 tiebreaker to Eastern Kentucky’s Milena Poffo.

In addition to her doubles title, Simic also picked up two more victories in singles play. She fell 2-6, 6-4, 2-10 in her Flight One opener to Evansville’s Mina Milovic but bounced back with a pair of wins (4-6, 6-3, 11-9 over Southeast Missouri’s Nikole Novikova and 6-4, 6-2 over Hitomi Naito). In the consolation finals, Simic fell by a 7-6, 6-1 margin to Monta Reinfelde of Western Kentucky.

Van Zyl and Herbold split their matches in Flight Two singles action. Van Zyl won 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 against Crofford of Western Kentucky before falling to Elizabeth Nyenwe of Southeast Missouri 6-3, 6-1. Herbold claimed a three-set victory against Evansville’s Richardson (1-6, 6-4, 11-9) but fell 6-4, 6-1 to Austin Peay’s Vanessa Tavares.

In Flight Four singles, Florence Nicole and McCall each went 1-1. Nicole earned a 6-4, 6-0 win over Evansville’s Kelsey Edens but fell 6-0, 6-0 to Jimenez of Eastern Kentucky in the finals. McCall fell to Jimenez 6-0, 6-1 in her opening singles match but claimed the consolation championship with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Southeast Missouri’s Schaper.

Sophomore Jessica Silva competed in the Flight Three singles, falling to SIU Edwardsville’s McKenzie Thomas 6-1, 6-4. She recovered to pick up a convincing 6-0, 6-4 win against Jovana Karac of Austin Peay but fell to Evansville’s Kelsey Costales of Evansville in the consolation semifinals.

Winkelmann teamed with Laing in the Flight One doubles competition, earning an 8-3 win over SIU Edwardsville’s Kali Donner and Lindsey Raymond in their opener. Winkelmann and Laing were then defeated 8-4 by Melissa Gerritsen and Saioa Oscoz of Eastern Kentucky.

In Flight Three doubles, Nicole and Silva nearly picked up a pair of victories before coming up just short against Southeast Missouri’s Courtnell/Martin and Western Kentucky’s Barboza/Crofford by identical 9-7 scores.

Winkelmann ran into some tough luck in Flight One singles, falling 6-4, 6-4 to Southeast Missouri’s Heather Robinson and 6-4, 6-1 to SIU Edwardsville’s Donner.

The Skyhawks will take next weekend off from competitive action before returning to the courts at the Memphis Fall Tournament on Oct. 12-14.
