MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin cross country teams posted arguably their best result of the season this weekend at the Rhodes College Cross Country Invitational held at Shelby Farms.

The Skyhawk men finished third out of 18 teams, posting a total time of 2:18.11 and an average time of 27:39 in the 8k course. UT Martin’s women placed fourth out of 16 squads, compiling a total time of 1:40.34 and an average time of 20:07 in the 5k.

Out of 150 men’s runners, UT Martin senior Tallon Scott produced a ninth place finish with a time of 26:46. Ryan Pett (27:33) and Josiah Roberts (27:40) soon followed, as well as Justin Morgan (27:56) and Vance Pounders (28:16) to round out the scoring.

Trevor Hancock (28:33), Zach Phifer (30:08) and Mark Graubner (31:14) completed a strong finish for the Skyhawk men’s team.

Senior Amanda Wardlaw’s time of 19:24 paced the Skyhawk women’s squad, as she brought home eighth place honors out of 141 competitors. Hannah Wolters’ time of 20:00 was the next best time for the women’s team, while Kathryn Skaggs and Samantha Hunt accounted for times of 20:15 and 20:20, respectively. Kaycee Grimes (20:35) completed the scoring for the Skyhawks.

Alexandra Stover (20:40) and Emily Jones (21:00) were the next highest finishers for UT Martin, followed by back-to-back finishes by Laura Wind (21:55) and Abby Frantom (21:57). Grace Lucas’ time of 23:05 capped off a successful team run.

“Both teams ran very solid and we needed this marker of improvement fitness,” Skyhawk head coach Gordon Sanders said. “Three of last year’s top performers are finally showing good form and the freshmen ladies are racing very consistently. With Amanda improving at each race, Tallon also getting on the awards stand and a couple of good personal bests recorded this week, it was a sigh of relief. There is still more we can do with four weeks before OVC – now for the hardest work before our next test in two weeks.”

UT Martin returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Front Runner Invitational, hosted by UT Chattanooga.
