MCGOWEN SCORES TWICE AS SOCCER TEAM CHALKS UP 2-1 OVC VICTORY OVER MURRAY STATE
September 30, 2012
MARTIN, Tenn. – Junior Hannah McGowen netted a pair of goals in the second half to lead The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Murray State this afternoon at Skyhawk Field. The Skyhawks are now 5-4-3 this season and are unbeaten in their last six matches.
Today’s match was the first multi-goal outing of McGowen’s career. The pair of goals was also the first two of the season for the Murfreesboro native, who helped UT Martin erase a 1-0 halftime deficit with strikes in the 56th and 74th minutes.
Overall, the UT Martin offense outshot Murray State by a 30-14 margin, including 17 shots in the second half alone. McGowen’s seven shots – including four on goal – led the Skyhawks today.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Sarah Tompkins made her season debut this afternoon for UT Martin, making eight saves in all 90 minutes in goal. Five of Tompkins’ saves came after McGowen’s second goal, helping the Skyhawks preserve their 2-1 lead.
A Skyhawk foul set up the first goal of the match – as Murray State’s Veronika Pribyslavska converted a penalty kick a little over two minutes into the match. Tompkins was able to get a hand on the ball before it rolled past the end line to give the Racers a 1-0 lead.
Tompkins also made a stop at the 8:27 mark before Alyssa Curtis attempted UT Martin’s first shot on goal in the 16th minute.
McGowen then began a barrage of shots – attempting three in an 18 second span but her two shot on goal attempts were saved. Under 30 seconds later, Midori Sera attempted to even the match but her shot was saved by Stevenson.
Conc (35th minute) and Sanvee (40th minute) also put shots on goal to close out the first half but Stevenson came up with two more saves.
Sera fired a shot on goal just 45 seconds into the second half, followed by a pair of shots on goal by Saphyra Coombs-James. However, all three attempts were saved.
McGowen then tied up the score at the 55:50 mark. Sera headed a pass towards the right side of the goal that McGowen received about 10 yards away. McGowen then dribbled a few yards and scooted the ball past Stevenson for her sixth career goal.
The score stayed at 1-1 thanks to Tompkins, who notched a pair of saves over a four minute stretch. UT Martin’s Amy Maksimowicz sent a shot on goal in the 62nd minute but Stevenson tallied her eighth save of the match.
The Skyhawks’ next shot on goal attempt was true. Conc sent a cross toward the goal that forced Stevenson to dive to her left. The ball skipped past Stevenson and found McGowen with a wide open net in front of her. She then tapped the ball into the back of the net to propel UT Martin to a 2-1 advantage at the 73:53 mark.
Murray State then made a late push to force overtime but Tompkins carried the Skyhawks over the last 15:31. The Franklin, Wis. native came up with a pair of stops in a span of 41 seconds to halt the Racer comeback attempt. Tompkins also recorded a save in the 82nd minute to keep the score at 2-1.
UT Martin’s Ashlie Watson nearly gave UT Martin a two-run cushion with 5:04 remaining in regulation. She drew Stevenson out and unleashed a hard shot on goal from about 10 yards away but Stevenson managed to make the save.
Tompkins wasn’t finished, however. She made a save in the 88th minute off a header attempt. Then with 47 seconds left in the match, she drifted back, jumped and made a punch-save to ensure the Skyhawks held on to the lead. Murray State’s ensuing corner kick did not result in a shot attempt and UT Martin ran out the last 38 seconds.
The Skyhawks will take their unbeaten OVC record to the road for their next two matchups. UT Martin travels to Eastern Illinois on Friday, Oct. 5 (3:30 p.m.) and SIU Edwardsville on Sunday, Oct. 7 (1 p.m.).
