MARTIN, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team opened the 2012-13 season on the road at Kansas State against the host Wildcats and SMU. Erin Douglas and Hunter Ralston claimed MVP honors for the Skyhawks, while Kathryn Gorsuch earned points in both events she competed in.

“While today was a loss, we had some great rides along with great scores,” UT Martin head coach Meghan Cunningham said. “Not every day do you consistently score above 70 in Western and above 85 in Hunter seat and walk away with a loss.”

The Skyhawk riders put on a clinic in the Hunter Seat competition against SMU despite losing 6-4.

In Equitation, the Skyhawks claimed a 3-2 victory as Douglas led the way with an 88-point ride and MVP honors. Ralston (82 points) and Kara Bergenty (88 points) also scored points in the event.

The lowest score in the event for the Skyhawks was a 77, while the highest scores were the 88s by Douglas and Bergenty.

In Equitation over Fences, the Skyhawks suffered a 4-1 setback. Nora Wilson claimed the team’s lone point with a 75-point ride. However, Ralston, Reid Rickett, Bergenty and Katie Miranda all scored more than 80 points on their respective rides.

Just like the setback to SMU, the Skyhawks battled Kansas State in the Hunter Seat competition only to suffer a 6-4 setback.

The Skyhawks won Equitation on the Flat, 3-2. Mykaela VanSelus, Rickett and Ralston all won their respective points. Ralston’s 88-point ride won the event’s MVP honor.

Kansas State won Equitation over Fences 4-1 and claimed the Hunter Seat event 6-4. Miranda claimed the Skyhawks lone point in Equitation over Fences.

In the Skyhawks only Western competition of the weekend, Kansas State claimed a 7-3 victory and won the overall (Hunter Seat and Western) competition 13-7.

Gorsuch scored the Skyhawks only point in Horsemanship with her 72-point ride.

In reining the Skyhawks were edged 3-2. Michele Chulock and Gorsuch each scored a point.

“Our athletes rode great and we look forward to continuing with our season against Delaware State in November,” Cunningham said.
