MARTIN, Tenn. – Senior quarterback Derek Carr completed 17-of-39 passes for 223 yards against visiting Eastern Kentucky Saturday at Hardy M. Graham Stadium. It was enough for The University of Tennessee at Martin signal caller from nearby McKenzie to become the Skyhawks’ all-time leading passer with 6,300 yards.

“It’s an honor to break this record,” Carr said. “I grew up 30 minutes from here, so, it’s a pretty big deal to break a record like this around here.”

It wasn’t enough for the host Skyhawks to pull out an upset over the No. 19 Colonels who were led by senior wide receiver Tyrone Goard and quarterback TJ Pryor. Eastern Kentucky claimed a 28-16 Ohio Valley Conference victory.

Goard had seven receptions for 175 yards. Four of the seven catches were for touchdowns and three of the four came in the second half as the Colonels outscored the Skyhawks 21-3 in the second half.

Pryor completed 12-of-26 passes for 211 yards and three TDS to Goard. Pryor also set an EKU school record for most career yards passing. He has 6,085 career passing yards.

“You had two good OVC teams out there,” UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson said. “The difference was on third down for them, they were 13-of-23. We couldn’t stop them on third down.”

The Skyhawk defense gave up 123 rushing yards and 282 passing yards, while the Skyhawk offense jumped out to a 13-7 advantage at the half. Senior Jason McNair score on a 4-yard run midway through the first quarter and walk-on running back Trent Garland scored on a 1-yard run with two minutes left in the first half.

The Skyhawks opened the second half with a 31-yard Cody Sandlin field goal, but that was it as the Colonels stormed back with the tandem of Pryor and Goard.

Jared McClain hit Goard with a 25-yard touchdown pass with 2:31 to play in the third quarter and the Colonels never looked back.

“They took the lead and we could never get it back,” Simpson said.

Pryor and Goard hooked up twice in the fourth quarter for touchdowns.
