MEN OPEN SEASON WITH SECOND-PLACE FINISH IN MISSOURI VALLEY RODEO; FRESHMAN WINS ALL-AROUND IN FIRST COLLEGIATE RODEO
September 25, 2012
MARTIN, Tenn. – It didn’t take John Luthi, the head rodeo coach at The University of Tennessee at Martin to figure out he had some talent on his young rodeo team. Freshman Meredith McDonnell and junior John Alley claimed all-around titles this past weekend at the Missouri Valley College Rodeo in Marshall.
“We did some good things,” Luthi said. “Everyone competed well and everyone supported one another on the team.”
McDonnell, a freshman, won the all-around by taking first in the barrel racing average with a 30.28 on two runs. McDonnell won the first go with a time of 15.22 and then won the second go with a time of 15.06.
McDonnell also finished seventh in the goat tying average with a total time of 23.2 on two runs. She split fourth and fifth in the first go with a time of 8.3.
Alley, from Adams, was first in the team roping as the header with a total time of 11.8. He finished third in the steer wrestling with a time of 12.7.
Unfortunately for McDonnell and the women’s team, the influx of newcomers made it difficult to pick the right four for the team points.
We have a good group of women,” Luthi said. “The women’s team is younger than the men’s team,” Luthi said.
However, the men finished second in the rodeo with 530 points. Missouri Valley College won the first Ozark Region of the year with 640 ppoints. Tyler Waltz scored 75 points for UT Martin in the bareback riding. He picked up 10 points in the first go with a 63-point ride to finish sixth. His 72-point ride in the second round was good enough to split third and fourth.
Ben Walker split second in the first go of the team roping with a 5.7 run. He did not have a time in the second go, but he finished third in the second go.
Clay Mitchell was fifth in the calf roping second go. He had a time of 17.6.
Ty Hughston won the second go in the saddle bronc riding with a 71-point ride. He was second in the average. Jacob Dagenhart was second in the saddle bronc first go with a 54-point ride. However, Dagenhart won the second go and was first in the average.
The UT Martin rodeo teams return to action Oct. 4-6 when they compete at Murray State.
