SOCCER TEAM TO MAKE UP SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MATCH ON TUESDAY
September 24, 2012
MARTIN, Tenn. – The soccer match between The University of Tennessee at Martin and Southeast Missouri will be played at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow (Sept. 25) at Houck Stadium in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
The match will be the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams and will pit the defending Ohio Valley Conference tournament champion (UT Martin) and regular season champion (Southeast Missouri).
The Skyhawks will look to continue their recent success at Houck Stadium, as the squad has not lost on that field since 2007. UT Martin won four times in Cape Girardeau last year alone – including three during its OVC Tournament run, clinching the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
UT Martin enters the match with a 3-4-2 record but appears to be playing some of its best soccer of the season, going unbeaten (2-0-1) over its last three matches. The Skyhawks rank atop the OVC statistical rankings in points (50, 5.56 per match), goals per match (1.89) and assists (16, 1.78 per match).
Individually, the Skyhawks have had nine different players score a goal in 2012, led by senior Kendyl Wilson. The Collierville native ranks in the top-three in the OVC in goals (four), assists (three) and points (11). Saphyra Coombs-James (three goals, two assists), Dominika Conc (two goals, two assists) and Hannah McGowen (three assists; tied for second in the OVC) also lead UT Martin offensively.
In goal, sophomore Mariah Klenke has logged all 850 minutes for UT Martin this fall. She has posted 40 saves, a .741 save percentage and a 1.48 Goals Against Average. She has been very effective as of late, conceding just one goal over her last 263:49 dating back to the Lipscomb match on Sept. 9.
Southeast Missouri enters the match with a 1-6-2 overall record but has faced an extremely difficult nonconference schedule – playing the likes of Louisville, Kentucky, Nebraska and Memphis.
Erin Shulman leads the Redhawks with three points scored in 2012, while Courtney Luehmann and Ashley Geist have also netted goals for Southeast Missouri. The Redhawks have put 35 of their 74 shots on goal for a .473 percentage.
At goalkeeper, Renee Kertz has logged the majority of the minutes, sporting an impressive 1.08 GAA. In nearly 500 minutes, she has racked up 26 saves and is responsible for both of Southeast Missouri’s shutouts (ties against Saint Louis and Evansville).
