SOCCER TEAM RUNS ITS UNBEATEN STREAK TO THREE WITH 2-0 WIN AT KENNESAW STATE
September 16, 2012
KENNESAW, Ga. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team recorded its second shutout of the season this afternoon with a 2-0 triumph against Kennesaw State at the KSU Soccer Stadium.
Today’s result was the fourth career shutout for sophomore goalkeeper Mariah Klenke, who faced 16 shots and corralled six saves for UT Martin (3-4-2), who has not lost since Sept. 7.
Offensively, the Skyhawks relied on senior Midori Sera and freshman Saphyra Coombs-James. Sera came up with her second goal of the season in the 33rd minute, while Coombs-James added a big insurance goal in the 65th minute for her third goal in 2012. UT Martin’s Dominika Conc and Hannah McGowen each were credited with an assist.
Klenke was tested early, as she came up with a save just 77 seconds into today’s match. It was the first of four Kennesaw State shot attempts through the match’s first 11:41.
After Alyssa Curtis attempted the Skyhawks’ first shot of the match at the 13:00 mark, Klenke registered two more saves in a span of 57 seconds to keep the match scoreless.
Kendyl Wilson then put UT Martin’s first shot on goal in the 17th minute, igniting a barrage of shots by the Skyhawks. Jaclyn Heckle’s shot on goal at the 28:03 mark was saved by Owls’ goalkeeper Melissa Hutto, but UT Martin would break through with a goal almost six minutes later.
At the 32:57 mark, Sera received a feed from Conc and found the upper left portion of the net to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 advantage. It was the sixth goal in 31 career matches in a UT Martin uniform for the San Francisco, Calif. native.
Kennesaw State came roaring back, however, driving two more shots on goal in a 53-second stretch. However, Klenke registered saves on both attempts to keep the score at 1-0.
UT Martin’s Lucy Pater almost gave the Skyhawks a two-goal lead just before halftime, but her header off a corner kick was snared by Hutto.
Klenke made her sixth save of the day at the 54:42 mark, preserving UT Martin’s shutout. Curtis struck a shot on goal in the 62nd minute that forced Hutto to scramble for a save.
After checking into the match at the 61:28 mark, Coombs-James made her impact felt immediately with a goal in the 65th minute. The Brampton, Ontario native found the back of the net off a corner kick set piece by McGowen, who tied a team-high with her third assist of the season.
From that point on, Kennesaw State would tally four shot attempts but none were on goal. UT Martin sophomore Ashley Reveiz nearly found paydirt in the 81st minute but her shot was scooped up by Hutto.
Today’s match was the final nonconference tuneup for the Skyhawks, who open Ohio Valley Conference play with a big match at Southeast Missouri on Friday, Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m. The match will feature the defending OVC Tournament champion (UT Martin) and the defending OVC regular-season champion (Southeast Missouri). The two teams split last year’s regular season series, with each team picking up road victories.
