LATE GOAL BY CONC LEADS TO HARD-FOUGHT 1-1 TIE AT GEORGIA STATE
September 14, 2012
ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Tennessee at Martin sophomore Dominika Conc came up with a clutch goal in the 87th minute of tonight’s match at Georgia State, resulting in a 1-1 double overtime tie with the Panthers of the Colonial Athletic Association.
Conc’s goal – a shot from 18 yards out that landed in the top left corner of the net – was her second of the 2012 campaign and fifth of her career. Freshman Saphyra Coombs-James was credited with the assist – her second of the season.
The Skyhawks (2-4-2) outshot Georgia State by an 11-8 margin this evening, putting five of its attempts on goal. Seven players attempted at least one shot tonight, led by two apiece by Conc, Coombs-James, Kendyl Wilson and Midori Sera.
Mariah Klenke made a pair of stops – including a game-saving snare in the double overtime period – while patrolling the goal for all 110 minutes this evening for the Skyhawks.
Both goalkeepers were put to the test early, as Georgia State goalkeeper Rebecca Toler and Klenke each recorded a save within one minute of each other through the first nine minutes of the contest.
At the 19:38 mark, Georgia State took the lead thanks to the third goal of the season by Whitney Ravan.
Sera got a good look at the goal just before halftime, firing a shot on goal that was scooped up by Toler at the 42:03 mark. That would be the last shot attempt for either side in the first 45 minutes of play.
UT Martin’s Alyssa Curtis sent a hard shot on goal in the 59th minute, but Toler snared the save. Coombs-James also had a shot on goal at the 73:17 mark that Toler picked up for a save. Conc’s heroics then sent the match into overtime.
The offensive pace slowed down considerably in the first overtime period, as no shots were attempted by either team.
In the 107th minute, Ravan’s bid for a multi-goal outing was put to a screeching halt by Klenke, who came away with the dramatic save to keep the score at 1-1.
Sera (wide) and Conc (blocked) each attempted a shot in the final minute but the Skyhawks settled for the draw.
UT Martin concludes its two-match swing through Georgia on Sunday, Sept. 16 when it takes on the Kennesaw State Owls of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The match is scheduled to begin at noon CT.
