MARTIN, Tenn. – Kasey Elswick, a senior on The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team, was named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced today.

Today’s announcement marks the 10th time in Elswick’s career that she has won the OVC’s weekly defensive award. That figure trails only Eastern Kentucky’s Brittany Nobilio (11-time honoree from 2006-09) as the most in league history.

Elswick’s play stood out in the First State Skyhawk Invitational over the weekend. In three matches, she tallied 93 digs in only 14 sets (6.64 per set). On Friday against DePaul, she boasted 40 digs in five sets, which ranks second in UT Martin single-match history behind the 46 digs she produced last season at Eastern Kentucky. She followed that up with a 21-dig effort in four sets against Wright State and a 32-dig performance in five sets against DePaul on Saturday.

Setting an NCAA single-season record with 852 digs last season, Elswick has accounted for 145 digs through six matches thus far in 2012, leading the conference. The defending two-time OVC Defensive Player of the Year now has 2,108 digs in her stellar career, by far the most in Skyhawk history and the seventh-highest total in the history of the OVC.

UT Martin returns to action this weekend at the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Ill. The Skyhawks will battle Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday, Sept. 7, followed by matchups against Nicholls State and Southern Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 8.
