STUDENT-ATHLETES GARNER ACADEMIC HONORS FROM THE OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE

NASHVILLE– Sixteen student-athletes at The University of Tennessee at Martin were among a record 176 Ohio Valley Conference student-athletes who received the Medal of Honor for the 2011-12 season. The Medal of Honor is given annually to the student-athlete who achieves the highest grade point average in a Conference sponsored sport.
The 176 honorees are the most in the history of the award, surpassing the record of 164 last year (2010-11). It also marks the eighth year in a row there have been more than 100 winners.
The UT Martin Medal of Honor Winners and their sport are as follows:
Men’s Cross Country –Trevor Hancock
Women’s Cross Country – Grace Lucas and Hannah Wolters
Football –Ethan Myers
Golf – Adam Clark
Rifle –Joe Barefoot
Soccer –Amy Maksimowicz
Softball –Leah Taylor
Women’s Tennis –Katie McCall, Jessica Silva, Ivon Simic, Johanie Van Zyl, and Anna Winkelmann
Volleyball –Kasey Elswick, Jenna Miller and Britany Wilburn
The OVC also announced that 1,061 student-athletes were named to the 2011-12 OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll, also setting a new record. UT Martin had 114 student-athletes make the Honor Roll.
To be listed, recipients must have achieved at least a 3.25 grade point average and have been eligible and on the team throughout the competitive season in their chosen NCAA-sponsored sport(s) and used a season of competition.
The 1,061 student-athletes surpassed the old record of 1,044 set in each 2008-09 and 2009-10.
