BASEBALL PLAYERS CONTINUE TO SHINE IN SUMMER COLLEGIATE LEAGUES
July 19, 2010
MARTIN, Tenn. - His players are not on campus, but that doesn't mean Bubba Cates, the head baseball coach at The University of Tennessee at Martin, is not paying attention to them as they spend the summer playing in various collegiate leagues across the country.
This past week, in the Valley League in Virginia and the Texas Collegiate League, rising junior Jordan Owen and rising sophomore Alec Mills posted career numbers.
Owen, a native of Kansas City, Mo., led the New Market Rebels to a 14-3 victory over the Winchester Royals. He went 5-6, with three runs, six RBI, two home runs, and a stolen base.
Owen, who set a new UT Martin single season home run record this past spring with 18, is hitting .352.
Owen's teammate Trey Karlen also turned in a stellar performance this past week against Winchester. Karlan was 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored, an RBI and a home run.
Down in the Texas Collegiate League, Mills continues to prove his worth for the Brazos Valley Bombers. Mills has pitched 20 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. The streak started June 20.
Mills, from Montgomery County (Tennessee) has allowed 20 hits and eight walks while striking out 15 batters.
"A lot of our guys are playing summer ball across the country," Cates said.
"Most of them are having good summers."
