WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM LANDS ONE OF MIDSTATE'S MORE DEADLY 3-POINT SHOOTERS
June 3, 2010
MARTIN, Tenn. - She is an exceptional 3-point shooter with unlimited range, a great passer and she feeds the post well, but that's not why Kevin McMillan, the head basketball coach at The University of Tennessee at Martin is signing Taylor Hall, a 5-9 guard from Mount Juliet to a scholarship.
"The best thing about Taylor ... she's a competitor and wants to win," McMillan said. "She is concerned about the team first and is willing to do what's in the best interest of the team. She fits perfectly with the kids we want here."
Hall, who is transferring from Roane State Community College, will join a roster that includes 12 newcomers and two junior college players. She also is one of 14 players on the roster from Tennessee.
This past season as a sophomore at Roane State, she saw action in 22 games and scored 319 total points (14.5 points per game).
Serving as one of the team captains, Hall led the team in 3-pointers made with 63.
As a freshman, Hall averaged 12.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game and led the team in assists with 4.5 per game. She also shot 41.5 percent from 3-point range and 86 percent from the free throw line.
"UT Martin is a good fit for me," Hall said. "Coach McMillan was recruiting me when he was at MTSU ... so we go back a couple of years."
Hall was regarded as one of the more deadly long-range shooters in Middle Tennessee when she played for head coach Chris Fryer at Mount Juliet High School.
"Taylor was a great player," Fryer said. "She was strong and physical and she was a tremendous 3-point shooter."
During Hall's senior season at Mount Juliet she averaged more than five assists per game. "She wasn't even our point guard," Fryer said.
"She's a tremendous passer and she has a high basketball IQ, that's her greatest attribute." As a senior, Hall knocked down 63 treys. She shot 36 percent from behind the arch and 89 percent at the free throw line.
Hall suffered from an ACL injury her junior year, but instead of opting for surgery and a long rehab, she returned for her senior season and played with a brace on her knee. Hall went on to win the District 9-AAA Most Valuable Player award, beating out Georgia signee Jasmine Hassell from rival Wilson Central High School.
"That showed me how tough she was," Fryer said.
