FOOTBALL, SOFTBALL PLAYERS CLAIM MALE AND FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR HONORS
May 12, 2010
MARTIN, Tenn. - Joe Gibbs and Megan Williams were named The University of Tennessee at Martin male and female athletes of the year Tuesday at the fifth annual Senior Athlete Night in the Boling University Center on campus.
Gibbs, a four-year starter on the Skyhawk football team, from Brilliant, Ala., was named the Bob Carroll Male Athlete of the Year, while Williams a four-year starter on the Skyhawk softball team, from Murfreesboro, Tenn., was named the Bettye Giles Female Athlete of the Year.
Gibbs was one of the most dominant forces at his position in the Ohio Valley Conference over the past two seasons. He was named to three All-American teams as a senior and was also a two-time All-Ohio Valley Conference honoree.
After changing positions midway through his career, he ended his career with 31 consecutive starts on the offensive line. In 23 starts over the past two seasons, he did not allow a single sack and helped block for the program's most prolific passer and also two of the best running backs in program history.
Williams is largely responsible for the two best softball seasons in UT Martin history. She is the all-time leader in three major offensive categories and ranks in the top-5 in 13 more offensive categories in the UT Martin career record books. This season, she leads the Ohio Valley Conference in six offensive categories and has led her team to the regular-season conference championship.
Williams will further her playing career this summer, as she has joined a team which will represent the USA and will face some of the best players in the world.
