SKYHAWK GOLF RECORDS 14TH PLACE SHOWING AT ARKANSAS STATE RED WOLF CLASSIC
April 13, 2010
JONESBORO, Ark. - The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team finished its inaugural visit to the Arkansas State Red Wolf Classic in 14th place after a final round 14-over-par 302 gave it a tournament total of 31-over-par 895. Graham Sleigh struggled down the stretch, carding a 5-over-par 77 in the final round to fall into a tie for 31st in the individual competition at 4-over-par 220.
The 2010 Arkansas State Red Wolf Classic was a 54-hole stroke play tournament conducted by Arkansas State University and hosted at the RidgePointe Country Club in Jonesboro, Ark. The 101-player field was made up of 18 teams from eight different states and 11 participants competing as individuals. The par 72 RidgePointe course is played at 6,565 yards.
"The course was set up much more difficult today," said Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter. "But that isn't really an excuse; we just didn't play very well in the final round. We let a lot of shots get away from us both off the tee and on the green, and that is what kept us from finishing higher up today."
Despite the tough final round, Sleigh was still the leader in scoring for the Skyhawks while Jonathan Martin turned in a solid 2-over-par 74 for the second consecutive round. Martin finished the Red Wolf Classic at 8-over-par 224 and among the top 50.
Bailey Childress was on target to finish the final round at even-par before a triple bogey on his 17th hole of the day settled him into a 3-over-par 75. He finished the tournament at 11-over-par 227. Adam Clark turned in a final round 4-over-par 76 to finish up at 17-over-par 233, while Sam Hinson struggled through the final round to finish up at 18-over-par 234.
Christopher Schwartz, who was playing as an individual, carded a final round 5-over-par 77 to finish up tied with Clark at 17-over-par 233.
In the team competition Middle Tennessee stormed back with a 6-under-par final round to claim a two stroke win over Central Arkansas at 6-under-par 858. Central Arkansas finished the final round at 7-over-par 295, falling into second at 4-under-par 860, while Stephen F. Austin claimed third with a 3-under-par 861 showing.
In the individual medalist competition Middle Tennessee's Jason Millard fired a 6-under-par 66 to claim a one shot victory at 7-under-par 209 over Stephen F. Austin's Michael Smith at 6-under-par 210. A three-way tie at 5-under-par 211 between Central Arkansas' Steven Lecuyer and Josh Sims along with Neal McCarty of SIU Edwardsville rounded out the top five.
The Skyhawks will now turn their attention to the Ohio Valley Conference Championships, which will be held at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn., April 26, 2010.
