MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team started out strong today by earning the doubles point, but could only pick up wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles in a 4-3 loss to Austin Peay in Ohio Valley Conference action at Skyhawk Courts.

Jodie Tiley and Alice Laing teamed up at No. 2 to defeat Carolin Weikard and Michelle Liew, 8-2. Austin Peay's Vanja Tomic and Mariana Pagan defeated Martie Wahl and Belisa de Brito 8-4 at No. 1, but the freshman duo of Anna Winkelmann and Anna Marie Herbold came away with an 8-4 victory over Demi Georgakopoulos and Yuki Nakamura at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.

Wahl took down Pagan 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 3 singles, while de Brito came through with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Georgakopoulous at No. 5. However, that would be the only singles matches UT Martin would win.

Tomic came from behind to defeat Tiley 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, while Weikard defeated Johanie Van Zyl 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. Winkelmann fell 7-6, 6-2 to Liew at No. 4, while Herbold lost a tough one at No. 6 to Nakamura - 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

"We got off to a good start by winning the doubles point," Skyhawk head coach Dennis Taylor said. "Then going into singles, we were winning first sets then tapering off toward the end of the match. We have a young team and that happens a lot with freshmen, but they are going to be tougher from this experience."

With the postponement of Sunday's match with Southern Illinois, UT Martin's next match will be against Tennessee Tech on Tuesday, March 30 at Skyhawk Courts at 1 p.m.
