GOLF SLIPS TO NINTH IN GRUB MART-YOUNG OIL INTERCOLLEGIATE FINAL ROUND

GLENCOE, Ala. - The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team slipped to ninth at the Grub Mart-Young Oil Intercollegiate after a final round 27-over-par 315, giving the Skyhawks a tournament total of 58-over-par 634. Senior Sam Hinson carded the best final round for UT Martin with a 4-over-par 76, while Jonathan Martin was the top overall finisher in a tie for 22nd at 11-over-par 155.
The 2010 Grub Mart-Young Oil Intercollegiate was a 36-hole stroke play tournament conducted by Jacksonville State University and hosted on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Silver Lakes in Glencoe, Ala. The 60-player field was made up of 10 teams, including five Ohio Valley Conference members, and 10 participants competing as individuals. The par 72 Silver Lakes Golf Course played at 6,949 yards.
Behind Martin in a tie for 22nd place was Hinson, who used his low final round score to move five spots up the leader board and into a tie for 29th at 13-over-par 157. Bailey Childress and Graham Sleigh both finished in a tie for 39th position at 18-over-par 162. Childress improved on his opening round with a 6-over-par 80, while Sleight struggled in his second round and carded a 12-over-par 84. Rounding out the scoring for the Skyhawks was Brent Webb finished at 21-over-par 165 after a final round 10-over-par 82.
The Skyhawks also had two individual competitors in the field, with Taylor Deming leading the way in a tie for 46th position at 21-over-par 165. Ryan DuLaney finished out the scoring for the Skyhawk individuals with a 32-over-par 176 showing.
In the team competition Jacksonville State moved from second place and finished the day with a nine stroke win at 17-over-par 593. Stetson finished in second at 26-over-par 602, 10 shots ahead of third place Armstrong Atlantic at 36-over-par 612.
In the individual medalist competition again only two competitors fired rounds in the red numbers. First round leader Mike Ballo, Jr., of St. John's struggled on day two, allowing Stetson's Sam Ryder to use a 1-under-par 71 to claim medalist honors at even-par 144 for the tournament. Jacksonville State's Gonzalo Berlin held on for a second place finish at 4-over-par 148, while there was a four-way tie for third place at 5-over-par 149.
The Skyhawks will next return to the Volunteer State to play in the Tennessee State Big Blue Intercollegiate next week.
