KICK FOR THE CURE A ROUSING SUCCESS FOR SKYHAWK SOCCER
March 9, 2010
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team's Kick for the Cure event on Saturday helped raise over $1,000 to help fight the battle against cancer.
"It went well," UT Martin assistant coach Brenton Saylor said. "It was great to raise money for a cure and it was also great for our program to help out."
Five teams from four different universities participated in the all-day event, which featured teams from UT Martin, Arkansas-Little Rock, Bethel and Union playing seven shortened matches on two different fields.
Representatives from the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and Sigma Chi fraternity were on hand to take up donations from fans, and the majority of Greek organizations helped raise money in the weeks leading up to the event. A silent auction was held and the most popular item available was limited-edition pink UT Martin soccer jerseys.
Although the event has passed, the team is encouraging the public to keep the donations coming. The soccer team has set up a team in the upcoming Relay for Life event in June.
"We want this to carry over into the fall and become an ongoing thing," Saylor said.
Anybody who is interested in donating to fight the battle against cancer is encouraged to email Saylor at bsaylor@utm.edu or call (731) 881-3931.
