ONEONTA, Ala. - Jonathan Martin and Adam Clark both fired opening round 3-over-par 75s to lead The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team to a ninth place showing in the first round of the Samford Intercollegiate. The Skyhawks shot a 16-over-par 304 as a team, to land in a tie for ninth with University of Montevallo.

The 2010 Samford Intercollegiate is a 54-hole stroke play tournament conducted by Samford University and hosted at Limestone Springs Golf Club in Oneonta, Ala. The 75 player field is made up of 15 teams, including three Ohio Valley Conference members. The par 72 Limestone Springs Golf Club is playing at 7,000 yards.

Martin had a consistent opening round to post his opening round score, going 37-38 75, while Clark recovered from a 4-over-par 40 on the front nine with a 1-under-par 35 on the back side. Barton Hamilton and Sam Hinson opened the Samford Intercollegiate with 5-over-par 77s. Hamilton made the turn at 1-over-par before posting a 4-over-par 40 on the back side, while Hinson turned at even-par before also struggling on the back nine with a 5-over-par 41. Chris Schwartz rounded out the scoring for the Skyhawks with a 41-40 81.

In the team competition Kennesaw State holds a three-stroke lead at 5-under-par 283 over Vanderbilt, which sits at 3-under-par 286. OVC member Murray State finished the first round in third place after carding a 5-over-par 293.

In the individual medalist competition Kennesaw State's Jeff Karlsson and J. P. Putnam sit in first and second. Karlsson is at 5-under-par 67, one stroke ahead of Putnam at 4-under-par 68. Vanderbilt holds the third and fourth place individuals with Hudson Johnson's 3-under-par 69 and Trey DelGreco's 2-udner-par 70. Rounding out the top five there was a five-way tie at 1-under-par 71.

Second round action of the Samford Intercollegiate immediately followed completion of the opening round and will conclude tonight before Tuesday's final round.
