GOLF MOVES UP TO NINTH IN FINAL ROUND OF GROVER PAGE CLASSIC

JACKSON, Tenn. - After waiting though a snow delay to start the morning, The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team used a 23-over-par 311 final round to move up the leader board an into a tie for ninth place at the Grover Page Classic at 68-over-par 932. Jonathan Martin was the top individual for the Skyhawks, finishing three rounds at 10-over-par 226.
Named for legendary UT Martin golf coach Grover Page, the Grover Page Classic was a 54-hole stroke play tournament conducted by The University of Tennessee at Martin and hosted at Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn. The 88-player field was made up of 16 teams, including six from Tennessee, and eight participants competing as individuals. The par-72 Jackson Country Club course played at 6,783 yards in length.
Page, who became the program's first coach in 1967, guided the program to eight appearances in the NCAA Championships, including a top-10 finish in 1988. In his career Page also coached 11 All-American Team members, 16 All-Gulf South Conference honorees, five All-Ohio Valley Conference selections and one GSC Tournament individual medalist. His teams finished among the GSC's top three five times and once as a member of the OVC.
"We missed some greens and had trouble getting it up and down today but considering the weather conditions and it being so cold outside we played pretty well," said UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter.
Behind Martin's 17th place showing, Christopher Schwartz turned in a 5-over-par 77 in the final round to finish the tournament at 12-over-par 228. Adam Clark finished the Grover Page Classic in a tie for 40th position at 18-over-par 234, while senior Sam Hinson finished his last showing at a home event at 31-over-par 247. One stroke back of Hinson was Bailey Childress at 32-over-par 248.
The UT Martin Orange team was led in the final round by Barton Hamilton's 2-under-par 70, helping it finish the tournament in 12th place at 86-over-par 950. Hamilton finished the individual competition in a tie for 28th at 14-over-par 216. Ryan DuLaney finished eight strokes back at 22-over-par 238, while Graham Sleigh came in at 23-over-par 239. Taylor Deming rounded out the Orange team's scoring at 30-over-par 246 and after being forced to withdraw the opening two rounds because of illness, Brent Webb rebounded in the final round with a 9-over-par 81, but was not eligible for medalist contention.
In the team competition Central Arkansas cruised to its third Grover Page Classic title in the last four years with a score of 17-under-par 847, 30 strokes better than second place North Alabama which finished at 13-over-par 877. Tennessee State rounded out the top three with a 27-over-par 891.
Individual medalist honors went to Central Arkansas' Gideon Pienaar by one stroke at 7-under-par 209 over his teammate Josh Sims, who finished at 6-under-par 210. Brett Munson of North Alabama rounded out the top three at 5-under-par 211.
UT Martin will return to the links next weekend when it travels to the Limestone Springs Golf Course in Oneonta, Ala., to compete in the Samford Intercollegiate.
