TWO IN-STATE RECRUITS SET TO JOIN UTM CROSS COUNTRY PROGRAM
February 13, 2010
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin head cross country coach Gordon Sanders has announced the additions of Colin Johnson and Vance Pounders to the Skyhawk roster for 2010-11.
Johnson ran cross country and track at Rossview High School in Clarksville for coaches Mark McNeil and Wade White. An honor roll student, he was a four-time all mid-state cross country selection while leading the Hawks to regional championships in 2006, 2007 and 2008. He was also a four-time all-region cross country selection and all-state mention in 2009, leading RHS to a mid-state championship in 2007.
"We are very pleased to have Colin join the Skyhawks next year," Sanders said. "He has committed to some impressive training loads that certainly paid off in his high placing at the state championships. He has not stopped there, but instead has increased his workloads leading into this track season and that is the work ethic every coach looks for. His impact on the team will be immediate."
A Nashville native, Pounders attended Pope John Paul II High School in Hendersonville, where he ran cross country for coach Veronica Del Valle and track for coach Roger Jones. He was a four-time all-state and all-county mention, while also taking home all mid-state honors in 2009.
"Vance is another top student that has very good speed but has the discipline to put in the miles for his endurance goals," Sanders said. "Also indicative of his motivation is that he is an avid student of the sport and its history. That love of running will certainly translate to his racing."
