OXFORD, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team battled but fell to Jacksonville State by a 6-5 margin this evening.

UT Martin (10-37, 6-20 OVC) was led by Ben Aslett’s three-hit day. The Melbourne, Australia native connected for two doubles and drove in one run in the contest. The duo of Collin Edwards and Casey Harford (home run) tallied a hit and an RBI each. Coming off of a perfect 4-for-4 performance, Tyler Albright picked up a pair of hits in the bout while also drawing two walks and scoring three runs for the Skyhawks. Jordan Stoner pushed his on-base streak out to 27 games as he recorded a base knock. Ethan Whitley and Billy Edwards rounded out the hit column for UT Martin with one apiece.

Winston Cannon tossed 5.1 innings of four-run baseball as he got the start for UT Martin. Cannon was able to fan four Gamecocks in his time on the mound. Peyton Cain (0-5) was tagged with the loss as he logged 1.2 innings of work in relief, allowing one earned run in that span. David Hussey pitched a perfect inning in his appearance as he recorded one strikeout for the Skyhawks.

Cannon would work around a two-out double in the first to hold Jacksonville State at bay through the first inning.

The Gamecocks would get on the board first though as they scored one run in both the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead through three innings.

UT Martin answered with a pair of runs in the fourth as Albright led off the frame with a five-pitch walk. Aslett followed with a first-pitch double down the right field line to plate Albright. Later, Whitley would single to put runners at the corners just in time for a Collin Edwards two-bagger to score Aslett as the Skyhawks tied things up at 2-2.

The UT Martin fifth looked identical to the previous frame as two more runs would cross home plate. On just the second pitch of the inning, Harford belted a home run to left center. Albright then singled to left before an Aslett double put both men in scoring position. Albright would later come home on a passed ball which gave UT Martin a 4-2 advantage.

Cannon rung up a pair of batters in the fifth inning as he worked around a hit by pitch and walk to get out of the frame unscathed.

Jacksonville State put up a trio of runs in the sixth to reclaim the lead by a 5-4 margin.

The Skyhawks tied it up again in the seventh as Albright connected for a single to left to lead off the frame. Aslett then singled and advanced to second on an error which also allowed Albright to cross the plate and knot things up at 5-5.

The Gamecocks answered in the home half of the seventh with a run of their own to give the eventual final score of 6-5.

Hussey would come on in the eighth inning and chew right through the Jacksonville State lineup. He sat down the first batter he faced via the punchout followed by a pair of friendly fly balls to end the inning.

UT Martin wraps up the series against Jacksonville State tomorrow with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
