MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball squad dropped both games of today’s doubleheader against Eastern Kentucky, missing out in a narrow 5-3 loss in Game 1 while dropping a 9-4 decision in Game 2.

UT Martin (5-19, 2-9 OVC) was led on the day by Jordan Stoner who collected five total hits while Carson Shrode tallied a trio of base knocks, finishing just a home run shy of the cycle in Game 2. Ben Aslett and Tyler Albright led the squad in terms of scoring today as they both drove in a pair of runs in the first and second games, respectively. Aslett recorded a home run today for his fourth of the season.

The Skyhawk pitching staff saw solid outings from Dom Bazzani (1-2) in Game 1 as he tossed five complete innings and rung up three Colonels while allowing just one earned run. Winston Cannon (0-4) pitched a solid six innings as he allowed just one earned run and retired five Eastern Kentucky batsmen via the strikeout. Nick Wohlbold twirled 1.1 innings of perfect baseball and recorded a strikeout in the process.

UT Martin returns to action tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for noon in the series finale against the Colonels.

Game 1                                                                                       

In the first game, UT Martin saw its production out of the bat of Aslett (one hit, two RBIs) while Stoner and Albright tallied two hits apiece. Collin Edwards, Ethan Whitley, Blake Davis, Billy Edwards and Casey Harford would all record a hit in the contest.

Bazzani showed his worth in the outing as he tossed five innings with a trio of strikeouts. Peyton Cain (0-2) was tagged with the loss as he allowed three earned runs in his 3.1 innings on the mound while he recorded a strikeout. Austin Buzick and Zack Denney would both record 0.1 inning of work.

The Colonels would put a run up on the scoreboard in the first as they claimed an early 1-0 lead.

UT Martin looked to answer back as Stoner led off the game with a single to right field and would then swipe second base. Albright then tallied a base knock to put men at the corners but to no avail.

Bazzani worked a fairly quick second inning as he forced a pair of flyouts followed by a walk but got out unscathed as he rung up a Colonel to end the frame. He avoided trouble in the third as he found a friendly fly ball for the first out but allowed a pair of runners to get on. Bazzani got help from his backstop Davis to throw a man out a third followed by a foul out to end the inning. He kept things going in the fourth as he retired the side in order on a pair of fly outs and a punchout.

The Skyhawks answered with a run in the fourth as Collin Edwards led off the frame with a single and then stole second. Davis beat out a single to third base to put runners at the corners. Edwards would find home plate on a wild pitch to tie things up a 1-1.

UT Martin saw both Albright and Aslett draw a pair of consecutive walks in the fifth but the bats just weren’t there to bring them home.

Cain came on in the sixth and forced a quick fly out to get things started. He would then give up a single but then found a friendly ground ball for the inning-ending double play.

The Skyhawks took the lead in the seventh as Stoner got things started with a single back to the pitcher and was able to advance to second on a throwing error. Aslett then stepped into the box and belted a homer downt he right field line, hooking the ball around the foul pole for the round-tripper and giving UT Martin a 3-1 advantage.

Eastern Kentucky answered with a pair of runs in the eighth to knot things back up at 3-3.

The Skyhawks looked to break the tie in the eight as Whitley led off the frame with a double to right field. Billy Edwards then tallied a single to put men on first and third but to no avail.

The Colonels tacked on two more runs in the ninth to take a 5-3 lead and give Eastern Kentucky the eventual final score for the victory.

Game 2

UT Martin was led in the second game of the day by the duo of Stoner and Shrode who both tallied a trio of hits while Shrode drove in one run. Albright would produce a pair of runs, both on sacrifice hits. Aslett rounded out the run production as he tallied a hit and RBI. Collin Edwards and Davis also tallied a base knock each in the bout.

Cannon (0-4) was tagged with the loss but put together six complete innings and allowed just one earned run with fanning five along the way. Jefferey O’Doherty tossed 0.2 inning and allowed one earned run but both outs came on punchouts for the righty. Wholbold dazzled in his 1.1 inning of work as he was perfect over the four outs and recorded a strikeout in the process.

Eastern Kentucky drew first blood as it put a pair of runs on the scoreboard in the first inning to claim an early 2-0 advantage.

Stoner led off the UT Martin half of the first with a single to right center but would be erased from the base paths on a double play.

Cannon worked through a tough second inning as he got through a bases-loaded situation by inducing a flyout to get out of the frame. He made quick work of the Colonels in the fourth as he retired the side in order on just 10 pitches with a strikeout in the process.

The Skyhawks would tie things up in the fourth as Stoner and Shrode hit back-to-back doubles, Stoner scoring on Shrode’s two-bagger. Albright would hit a long flyout that would allow Shrode to advance to third base. An Aslett single up the middle was good to plate Shrode and knot the score up at 2-2.

Cannon worked around a walk in the fifth as he recorded the first out of the inning via strikeout followed by a groundout and flyout to keep things even. Finding another quick frame in the sixth, he recorded another strikeout and force a flyout and got another friendly ground ball.

UT Martin would take the lead in the sixth as Shrode led off the inning with a triple to center field to set things up for an Albright sacrifice fly to plate Shrode and claim a 3-2 lead.

Eastern Kentucky would strike back with a four-run seventh followed by a three-run eighth to take a 9-3 advantage.

Wohlbld would come on in the eighth for the beginning of his solid outing as he ended the frame via the strikeout.

The Skyhawks tallied a run in the eighth as Stoner got things started with a single followed by Shrode connecting for a single of his own. Both runners would move up on a wild pitch just in time for another Albright sacrifice fly to plate Stoner and narrow the Colonels’ lead to 9-4, which would be the final margin.

Wholbold retired the side in order as he found a ground ball and a pair of fly outs to get through the Eastern Kentucky lineup.
