PLANTADA DELIVERS SINGLES VICTORY BUT UT MARTIN DROPS 6-1 DECISION AT UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior Andrea Plantada earned her first singles win of the season today but it ultimately wasn’t enough as the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad fell by a 6-1 margin to UAB today.
Plantada, who entered the match with doubles victories in back-to-back matches, fought through for a convincing 6-3, 3-6, 10-0 win over Jana Hecking at No. 4 singles. It was her second consecutive three-set match at singles as she earned her first win in three tries this spring.
The Skyhawks battled in doubles before the host Blazers took the opening point. Plantada and Amelia Campbell were defeated 6-2 at No. 2 while Asel Jumamukhambetova and Jemima Potter narrowly fell by a 6-4 margin at No. 1.
Jumamukhambetova lost 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 to open singles play before Potter dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 2. Olha Burak competed at No. 5 but was unable to come out on top, falling 6-3, 6-0. Campbell was defeated 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 while Mizuki Sakurai nearly claimed the first set at No. 6 before falling 7-6 (3), 6-4.
UT Martin resumes its nine-match road trip to begin the spring campaign on Friday, March 9 when it starts Ohio Valley Conference play against Jacksonville State. The match from Jacksonville, Ala. is scheduled to begin at noon.
