BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team opened its annual Spring Break trip with several hotly contested battles before the host Samford Bulldogs escaped with a 6-1 win at the Samford Tennis Center.
Playing in an official match for the first time in nearly a month, the Skyhawks came out fresh and played perhaps their best all-around tennis of the young spring season. UT Martin nearly picked up the overall doubles point before earning another victory and pushing the Bulldogs to the brink in singles action.
Andrea Plantada and Amelia Campbell teamed up at No. 3 doubles to come through with a gritty 7-6 victory. Asel Jumamukhambetova and Jemima Potter were immersed in a battle at No. 1 doubles before falling by a 6-4 margin. The all-freshman Skyhawk duo of Jule Streif and Mizuki Sakurai also put up a fight before falling 6-1 at No. 2.
In singles, Elina Geut soared to her first singles triumph of the spring, turning away Grace Jennings by a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 margin at No. 6. Plantada was close to earning her second victory of the day at No. 4 singles before she was defeated 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Olha Burak made her spring debut at No. 5, duking it out before ultimately dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision. Potter (6-0, 7-6) showed fight late before falling at No. 2 while Jumamukhambetova and Streif were defeated by identical 6-0, 6-2 scores at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.
UT Martin’s four-match trip through the Yellowhammer State continues on Wednesday, March 7 when the Skyhawks take on UAB at 2 p.m.
