UT Martin Game Notes

The No. 2 seeded University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to continues its quest for an Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship crown with a semifinal matchup against league rival No. 3 seed SIUE on Friday, March 2. Tipoff from the Ford Center is scheduled for 3 p.m.

The Skyhawks (18-13) advanced to the tournament semifinals after a thrilling quarterfinal matchup against No. 7 Southeast Missouri. UT Martin would trail for the majority of the contest – trailing by as much as nine points – before taking its final lead midway through the fourth quarter which it would not relinquish en route to a 63-60 victory.

With the victory, UT Martin advances to the OVC Basketball Championship semifinals for the eighth time in the past nine years while improving its record in tournament play to 14-5 under head coach Kevin McMillan. The Skyhawks almost moved to 3-0 inside of the Ford Center. Now the Skyhawks much shift their focus to SIUE who also finished with a 13-5 record in the regular season and tying for second in the league standings. With varying tie-breaker measures, UT Martin was awarded the No. 2 seed while SIUE dropped to the No. 3 seed line.

Freshman OVC All-Newcomer honoree Chelsey Perry played a huge part in the comeback victory, scoring 11 of her team-high 19 points in the second half while notching five rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Sophomore All-OVC first teamer Kendall Spray also notched a nice tournament appearance, scoring 14 points to round out the Skyhawks in double figures.

No. 3 seeded SIUE (17-13) advanced to the tournament semifinals after making short work of No. 6 seeded Austin Peay in the quarterfinals, posting a dominating 76-43 victory. Three different Cougars scored in double figures as Nakiah Bell (13 points), Lauren White (12 points) and Allie Troeckler (11 points) paced the squad offensively.

Friday’s matchup marks the 23rd matchup between the two programs in series history with UT Martin holding a 14-8 advantage. The two squads split the season series while both defending their respective home courts. On Jan. 20, SIUE pulled out a 73-70 victory on a three-pointer by White at the buzzer while UT Martin notched a 72-64 victory on Feb. 15. Overall, UT Martin has won six of the last eight matchups against SIUE while the game marks the first meeting in the OVC Basketball Championship for the two squads.
