February 27, 2018
MARTIN, Tenn. – Following yet another win over a nationally ranked opponent, the University of Tennessee at Martin rose up two spots to No. 8 in today’s National Collegiate Equestrian Association top-10 rankings presented by Farnam.
This marks the third week this season that the Skyhawks have been ranked at No. 8 and first time since Nov. 21. UT Martin has earned a spot in the NCEA top-10 polls in 12 consecutive weeks and were ranked 10th in each of the last two polls.
Georgia was once again ranked as No. 1 in this week’s poll, followed by No. 2 Auburn, No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 5 SMU, No. 6 TCU, No. 7 Baylor, No. 8 UT Martin, No. 9 South Dakota State and No. 10 South Carolina.
The Skyhawks split against a pair of top-8 opponents over the weekend in Dallas, Texas. UT Martin fell by a 13-5 margin to No. 5 SMU last Friday before bouncing back strong with a 10-6 victory over No. 8 South Dakota State one day later.
Horsemanship was the Skyhawks’ strong suit over the weekend, as UT Martin claimed six victories against just two losses. The freshman combo of Devon Woods and Bailey Newlin each produced wins in both competitions while Woods chalked up MOP accolades against South Dakota State.
Lindsay Anderson earned equitation on the flat victories in both matches last weekend, while Monika Zoromski (team-best fifth win) and Randi LaChance (team-high second MOP) each stood out in the event against South Dakota State.
Anderson also dialed up her first MOP of the season in equitation over fences while Abbie Hopkins notched her team-best sixth triumph against South Dakota State.
In reining, Noel Meadows posted her fifth win of the season over the weekend – tying her with Madeline Williams for the Skyhawk team lead in 2017-18.
UT Martin ends its regular season on March 15-16 when it hosts Sweet Briar College (exhibition) and Minnesota-Crookston at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion.
