The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will enter its ninth consecutive Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship as the No. 2 seed, matching up with No. 7 seed Southeast Missouri in the opening round of the single-elimination tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 28. Action from the Ford Center is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m.
The Skyhawks (17-13) finished the regular season in a tie for second place with a league mark of 13-5 while earning the No. 2 seed after ultimately winning the tie-breaker against SIUE on the final game of the year. This marks UT Martin’s ninth consecutive tournament appearance while serving as the ninth time in as many years that the Skyhawks have entered the field as a top-four seed.
UT Martin possess a legitimate threat to the championship crown after posting a 13-5 overall mark in OVC Basketball Championships dating back to the 2009-10 season - including championships in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. The Skyhawks enter tournament play having played some of its best basketball of the season down the stretch, winning nine of its last 10 contest while posting an average margin of victory of +12.1 points during the span. UT Martin last played in the Ford Center in 2012 and 2015, notching victories in both appearances.
The Skyhawks boast three players which earned postseason honors by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Sophomore Kendall Spray was rewarded for her strong play, averaging 17.8 points per game while setting a new program single-season three-point record with 117 made trifecta by earning All-OVC first team honors. Senior Ashton Feldhaus was also honored for her resurgence in league action where she has averaged 10.7 points per game to earn All-OVC second team honors. Freshman Chelsey Perry wrapped up postseason honors with an OVC All-Newcomer nod after averaging 11.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
Southeast Missouri (14-16) earned the No. 7 seed in the OVC Basketball Championship after posting a 9-9 mark in league play. The Redhawks are paced by the play of All-OVC first team selection and OVC Freshman of the Year honoree Tesia Thompson who leads the squad with 13.0 points while notching 5.3 rebounds per game.
Wednesday’s contest marks the 67th meeting in series history between the two programs with UT Martin a 36-30 series advantages. The Skyhawks swept the season series this season, notching a 72-65 victory on Feb. 10 in Martin while squeaking out a 69-68 road victory in Cape Girardeau on Feb. 24.
