CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team posted a split of the day’s action on Day Two of the Chattanooga Frost Classic on Saturday afternoon, falling short to Western Michigan (8-2) before knocking off tournament host Chattanooga (4-2) in the late contest.
The Skyhawks (6-7) hit .275 as a team on the afternoon while scoring six runs and tallying 14 hits. Senior Jodie Duncan paced the squad with four base hits while junior Gracyn McBride notched two of her own while tallying one RBI. Junior Alli Fulcher would also tally a home run on the day, a solo blast.
Freshman Caitlin Karo (3-3, 2.45 ERA) picked up her second straight victory, allowing just two earned runs in seven innings of work against Chattanooga. Sophomore Seeley Layne (0-1, 14.00 ERA) struggled in her first start of the season, allowing three runs in two innings of work while Sara Hooten allowed four runs in four innings against Western Michigan.
Game 1: Western Michigan 8, UT Martin 2
UT Martin wasted little time jumping out to an early lead in the first game of the day. Lauren Myers would lead off the contest by drawing a walk before moving into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. The Skyhawks would capitalize on the opportunity as Duncan and McBride tallied back-to-back base knocks to take a 2-0 advantage.
Western Michigan looked to cut into the margin right away, answering with a run in the bottom of the first. Mackenzie Swinehart tallied a leadoff single down the left field line before later coming home to score on an error later in the inning to cut the deficit in half.
The Broncos completed their comeback attempt in the bottom of the second as the pair of Kaylen Glenfield and Logan Carter tallied a pair of solo home runs to take a 3-2 advantage. Western Michigan would then begin to put the game out of reach in the third inning as the trio of Aspen Williams, Marlee Wilson and Glenfield each tallied RBIs to stretch the team’s lead out to four runs.
Western Michigan capped off the game’s scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of runs, securing an 8-2 victory.
Game 2: UT Martin 4, Chattanooga 2
UT Martin took an early lead in the contest, scoring in the opening inning of the contest. Savannah Dodson tallied a single to left before moving into scoring position by tallying a stolen base. The bases would later become loaded in the inning as Alli Fulcher scored Dodson from third on a sacrifice fly to center to get on the board.
The Skyhawks added another run in the top of the third inning as Duncan led off the inning with a single up the middle – her second of the game. Freshman Alexis Rogers entered as a pinch runner before coming home later in the frame on a fielding error, giving UT Martin a 2-0 advantage.
Chattanooga broke through in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2. With two outs and runners at first and second, Devan Brown would lace a triple into center to clear the bases and knot the game up.
UT Martin retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning. After McBride was plunked by a pitch to start the inning, Aeron Smith would drive in pinch runner Madelyn Dycus, scoring the runner from second to take a 3-2 advantage.
The Skyhawks added a bit of insurance in the top of the seventh as Fulcher capped off the game’s scoring with a solo blast to left field, her second home run of the season. With the final run on the board, UT Martin would secure the 4-2 victory.
UT Martin will look to close out its stay in the tournament with a matchup against IUPUI on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 9 a.m.
