MARTIN, Tenn. – For the final time this season, the University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team will play in front of the home crowd as it clashes against Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Illinois on Senior Night. Tipoff on Saturday, Feb. 17 is tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m. (following the women’s basketball game as part of a doubleheader).
A trio of Skyhawks will be recognized before the game for their career accomplishments. Matthew Butler, Dominique Williams and Lorenzen Wright, Jr. have combined for 1,102 points, 275 rebounds, 238 assists and 75 steals in their four combined years at UT Martin.
The Skyhawks (9-19, 4-11 OVC) are currently one game behind both Eastern Illinois and SIUE for an OVC Tournament berth with three regular season games left to play. UT Martin is one of five teams trying to claim the final two open spots in the bracket of the tournament, which will take place in Evansville, Ind. on Feb. 28-March 3.
The Skyhawks own a 15-7 record all-time against the Panthers at home, including four consecutive victories since 2014. Each of the last two contests between these two squads in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center have gone into overtime, including last season’s 82-71 double-overtime thriller.
UT Martin will try to salvage a season split with Eastern Illinois, as the Panthers won an 80-60 decision back on Jan. 18 in Charleston. Parrish Hewitt’s 16 points paced three Skyhawks who reached double-figures in the scoring column.
Eastern Illinois (9-17, 5-10 OVC) is coming off an 80-73 setback on Thursday at Southeast Missouri. In that game, Montell Goodwin (team-high 18 points) and Muusa Dama (17 points, 10 rebounds) guided the Panthers, who overcame a 21-point deficit to tie the game with seven minutes remaining before ultimately falling.
Goodwin has averaged 20.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists over three career games against UT Martin. Freshman Mack Smith recorded 22 points and 11 rebounds earlier this season against the Skyhawks, knocking down six trifectas.
