UT MARTIN CHALLENGES UNDEFEATED MISSISSIPPI STATE BEFORE FALLING 3-0
February 15, 2018
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team competed nicely against Southeastern Conference opponent Mississippi State on Thursday evening before ultimately falling short 3-0 in the road contest.
The Skyhawks (2-3) playing in their first true road game of the season were paired up against a powerful SEC opponent on its home turf. UT Martin held Mississippi State in check for much of the contest before allowing its first base hit in the third inning. With the Bulldogs allowing just four base hits on the season and zero runs in the team’s first four games of the season, the Skyhawks would suffer a similar fate on the offensive side of the ball by tallying one base knock on the day.
Freshman Caitlin Karo (1-2, 3.50 ERA) posted a strong performance in the circle despite the final score. Paired against a dynamic offense, Karo would allow just three earned runs over six innings of work while striking out one.
UT Martin registered its first baserunner in the top of the third inning when senior Savannah Dodson reach base on a throwing error. Dodson would later notch her third stolen base of the season to move into scoring position. Despite the prime positioning on the bags, the Skyhawks would be stranded to end the inning.
Mississippi State (5-0) finally broke through onto the scoring column in the fourth inning following three consecutive singles to start the inning. The Bulldogs would score their first of three runs on the day off a single down the right field line by Sarai Niu.
The Bulldogs would tally a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning on three hits. With a double-play to start the inning, Mississippi State rallied in the frame with a two-out double, followed by a RBI triple by Mia Davidson, before scoring herself on an ensuing RBI double down the left field line by Reggie Harrison.
UT Martin would tally its lone base knock in the top of the seventh inning Jodie Duncan poked an opposite field single into the left-center gap but the rally would not come to fruition as the runner was stranded on the bags.
The Skyhawks will return to action on Friday, Feb. 16 with their appearance in the Alabama State Black and Gold Tournament which runs through Sunday.
