The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will play host to Ohio Valley Conference rival SIUE in front of a nationally televised audience on Thursday, Feb. 15. Tipoff from the Elam Center is scheduled for 4 p.m. and can be seen live on ESPNU. Fans are encouraged to wear navy blue.
This marks the third consecutive year in which UT Martin has been highlighted in the OVC premiere women’s basketball contest and broadcast on ESPNU. UT Martin last hosted a national audience when playing Belmont on Feb. 15, 2016, a game in which the Skyhawks outlasted the Bruins 81-79.
The Skyhawks (14-12, 10-4 OVC) enter the contest riding a season-long six-game winning streak dating back to late January. In the squad’s most recent matchup, UT Martin outmatched Southeast Missouri down the stretch last Saturday en route to a 72-65 victory. With the victory, the Skyhawks improved to 110-35 in OVC play under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan, including a 64-10 mark in games played inside the Elam Center.
UT Martin boast four players who average double figures in league play, led by one of the nation’s top three-point threats in sophomore guard Kendall Spray. The 5-7 guard enters the contest with 104 made three-pointers on the season, sitting just one trifecta off the program’s single-season three-point record of 105 set by former Skyhawk great Heather Butler in 2012-13, while ranking second nationally in made three-pointers and third in three-point field goals per game (4.0). The Skyhawks are also led by senior Ashton Feldhaus who tallied a career-high 23-point performance against Southeast Missouri while Chelsey Perry was named the OVC Freshman of the Week after a career-high 21-point outing of her own.
SIUE (15-10, 12-2 OVC) is riding a hot streak of its own, sitting second in the OVC standings while winning eight of its last nine contests. The Cougars have been stingy defensively as of late, allowing just 54.7 points per game over their last four contests. The senior tandem of Donshel Beck (14.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and Lauren White (14.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg) rank as the team’s top scorers while starting in all 25 games.
Thursday’s contest will be the 22nd meeting between the two program’s dating back to 1975 with UT Martin holding a 13-8 series advantage. SIUE won the previous matchup earlier this season on Jan. 20 on a three-pointer by White at the buzzer to give the Cougars a 73-70 victory. Despite the setback, UT Martin has won five of the last seven matchups against SIUE since the 2014-15 season.
The game will be broadcast live to a national audience on ESPNU and can be found on Charter Spectrum (Channel 302), DirecTV (Channel 208) and DISH Network (Channel 141). Fans can also tune into Star 95.1 FM to hear Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Cal Luther (color) provide analysis or to WUTM 90.3 FM “The Hawk”, UT Martin’s award winning college radio station.
