February 6, 2018
MARTIN, Tenn. – The latest Farnam National Collegiate Equestrian Association team rankings involved lots of movement in the top-10 but the University of Tennessee at Martin held strong at No. 9, the organization announced today.
Georgia stayed at No. 1 but the undefeated Bulldogs and Skyhawks were the only two schools who remained in their respective slots from last week’s spring-opening rankings. Texas A&M is now No. 2 and is followed by No. 3 SMU, No. 4 Auburn, No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 6 TCU, No. 7 Baylor and No. 8 South Carolina. Fresno State rounds out the poll at No. 10.
UT Martin is currently in preparation mode for its spring opener, which is only 10 days away against No. 6 TCU at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion.
The Skyhawks pieced together a quality résumé this fall, generating a pair of victories against five nationally ranked opponents. As a direct result, UT Martin entered the NCEA top-10 poll for the first time on Oct. 10 and have now been ranked amongst the nation’s best for nine straight weeks.
Freshman Abbie Hopkins has given the Skyhawks a lift in the Hunt Seat discipline, nabbing three MOP’s to go along with six head-to-head victories. Randi LaChance (two MOP’s) and Monika Zoromski (one MOP) are tied with Hopkins for the team-lead with six wins while Claire Ottinger and Quinn Reed have also pitched in one victory apiece.
In the Western discipline, freshman Tess Baumann boasts a team-high two MOP’s while Noel Meadows and Madeline Williams also have garnered a MOP honor. A total of eight different Skyhawks have posted Western victories, led by Williams (four), Baumann (three), Bobbie Piddock (three), Liana Nowak (three), Lucy Eier (two), Hannah McDonald (two) and Devon Woods (one).
