EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – A three-pointer by senior guard Lauren White at the buzzer would prove to be the difference in the ballgame as the University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team fell short at Ohio Valley Conference foe SIUE on Saturday night.
In a game with eight lead changes, UT Martin and SIUE battled it out like many of the two team’s previous matchups. The Cougars would jump out to a 12-point lead in the first quarter before the Skyhawks made a comeback in the second quarter and took their first lead in the third. Sizable leads for both squads would be wiped away with convincing runs while finding contributions throughout the scoresheet.
The Skyhawks (8-12, 4-4 OVC) saw five players score in double figures for just the second time this season. Sophomore Kendall Spray paced the Skyhawks with 16 points while Maddie Waldrop (13 points), Janekia Mason (12 points), Emanye Robertson (11 points) and Zaire Hicks (10 points) each scored in double-digits.
“We did not come to play to start the contest,” said UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan. “Then we didn’t put it away when we had control. Several turnovers, missed free throws and failed box outs proved costly down the stretch. If you aren’t going to make free throws and give up layups, the results will speak for themselves. It is going to be tough until we all sell out and do what we are supposed to do.”
SIUE (10-9, 7-1 OVC) wrapped up its four-game homestand with a thrilling victory while ranking amongst the conference’s elite in the standings. Along with the game-winner, White tallied a game-high 20 points while notching seven assists. The Cougars also saw the trio of Allie Troeckler (15 points), Jay’Nee Alston (11 points) and Sydney Bauman (10 points) score in double figures.
The Cougars would use their home court to their advantage in the first quarter, holding the Skyhawks without a field goal until the 1:13 mark of the quarter on a layup by Robertson. While UT Martin struggled to shoot from the field, making just 1-of-13 shot attempt in the opening quarter, SIUE took advantage of the slump to push its lead out to 12 points heading into the second quarter at 17-5.
The one-woman wrecking crew of Spray would single-handedly get the Skyhawks back in the game through the opening minutes of the second quarter by knocking down three consecutive three-pointers to turn a 12-point deficit into a one possession contest. UT Martin would keep up the pressure in the quarter, outscoring SIUE 21-11 in the second. Despite the sizable run by UT Martin, SIUE would take 28-26 advantage into halftime.
Both teams would watch its offense develop in the third quarter as the squads combined to score 46 points in the period. Action would go back and forth with seven lead changes in the third quarter along with a handful of ties. The freshman duo of Hicks and Maddie Waldrop would play a big part in the quarter, combining to knock down a trio of three-pointers to give UT Martin a 52-48 lead after three.
The game’s intensity would remain high in the fourth quarter as it featured four ties, including a game-tying three-pointer by Feldhaus with four seconds to play for the Skyhawks after trailing by five points with just over a minute left to play in regulation. After the big shot to tie the contest, SIUE would call a timeout to advance the ball and set up White for her heroics as she rose up and knocked down a three-pointer as time expired to lift the Cougars to a 73-70 home victory.
UT Martin will continue its road trip on Thursday, Jan. 25 at Jacksonville State. Tipoff from Pete Mathews Coliseum is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
