MARTIN, Tenn. – After a challenging fall slate that included four tournaments, the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad officially starts its spring schedule this Friday, Jan. 19 when it travels to in-state rival Memphis.
Head coach Dennis Taylor will preside over a youthful Skyhawk squad this spring, as the roster includes only one senior. UT Martin will look to reclaim its spot in the Ohio Valley Conference’s upper echelon in 2018, as the Skyhawks finished second in the league standings last year after winning the 2016 regular season championship.
Reigning All-OVC second teamer Asel Jumamukhambetova led the team with seven singles victories and shared the team lead with six doubles victories this fall. The junior from Atyrau, Kazakhstan went 22-6 in singles last season, including an 8-1 mark against league opposition.
Jemima Potter teamed with Jumamukhambetova to notch a team-best six doubles wins this past fall. That strong performance came after the junior from Northampton, England was responsible for a team-best 22-5 doubles mark (8-0 in OVC) in 2016-17.
An Orenburg, Russia native, Elina Geut is the team’s lone senior. She generated a 3-2 mark in doubles this fall and accounted for a 19-10 combined record (12-8 singles, 7-2 doubles) last season.
Olha Burak ranked second on the team in singles victories (five) while chipping in three doubles wins this fall. The junior from Lviv, Ukraine posted a 12-4 total record in 2016-17 – going 7-2 in doubles and 5-2 in singles.
Mizuki Sakurai earned six combined wins during her first taste of collegiate competition this fall. The freshman out of Tokyo, Japan won three singles decisions and joined forces with fellow freshman Jule Streif to go 3-0 in doubles play.
Hailing from Oberkirch, Germany, Streif went 4-2 in doubles competition this fall. She also added a pair of singles victories while showing immense potential during the opening half of her debut season.
Amelia Campbell also flashed steady promise in her first collegiate action this fall. The freshman out of London, England won her singles debut and also chalked up a win alongside Streif in doubles.
The Memphis match is one of seven nonconference matches on UT Martin’s 2018 spring schedule. The Skyhawks play their first eight matches of the season on the road – including their OVC opener at Jacksonville State on March 9 – while the home opener is set for March 17 against Eastern Kentucky. For the fourth consecutive year, the OVC Championship will be played at the Centennial Sportsplex Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn. on April 20-22.
