The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will hit the road for the first of four consecutive games away from home with a matchup at Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Illinois on Thursday, Jan. 18. Tipoff from Lantz Arena is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
The Skyhawks (7-11, 3-3 OVC) will look to get back to their winning ways after dropping a heartbreaking overtime decision their last time out. Despite holding a lead in the fourth quarter, UT Martin would be held without a field goal for approximately nine minutes stretching through the end of regulation and late into the overtime period, ultimately proving to be the team’s demise as they dropped an 81-76 decision on their home court. Serving as a bright spot in the contest was the play of freshman Chelsey Perry who paced all scorers with a career-high 21-point performance while grabbing nine rebounds.
UT Martin is led offensively by four players who are averaging in double figures during league play. Kendall Spray leads all scorers with 17.3 points per game – 16.5 ppg against conference foes - while ranking second nationally with 70 made three-pointers on the season. Junior Emanye Robertson (13.5 ppg), Ashton Feldhaus (12.8 ppg) and Perry (11.0 ppg) are each averaging double-digits in OVC play.
Eastern Illinois (2-15, 1-5 OVC) enter the contest having recently snapped a lengthy 12-game losing streak with a 66-59 overtime victory against Tennessee State a week ago before falling to OVC favorite Belmont by 28 its last time out. The Panthers boast a pair of players averaging in double figures in league play, led by Taylor Steele (14.8 ppg) while Karle Pace (11.0 ppg) is close behind to round out the duo.
Thursday’s matchup marks the 50th meeting between the two programs in series history with UT Martin holding a 31-18 series advantage. The two squads split the season series a year ago, both picking up victories on their home court while the Skyhawks have won 10 of the last 11 matchups against the Panthers dating back to the 2012-13 season.
