MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball squad will look for its third straight victory over Morehead State when it hosts the Eagles for an Ohio Valley Conference showdown at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center on Saturday, Jan. 13. Tipoff is scheduled for approximately 6 p.m., following the women’s game.
While the Skyhawks have maintained the upper hand in the recent series against these two teams, all of the last four regular season meetings have been determined by seven or less points. That includes a pair of overtime victories by UT Martin in each of Morehead State’s last two visits to the Elam Center (81-77 on Dec. 31, 2016 and 75-72 on Jan. 10, 2015).
In last season’s lone matchup against the Eagles, Matthew Butler went off for a game-high 31 points - including the go-ahead bucket with eight seconds to go in overtime. That game featured 17 lead changes and 12 tie scores before the Skyhawks sealed the game by making five of their six field goal attempts in overtime.
UT Martin (6-12, 1-4 OVC) is coming off a 78-70 setback against Eastern Kentucky on Thursday. Butler (22 points), Parrish Hewitt (12), Dominique Williams (11) and Jailen Gill (10) each scored in double-figures for the Skyhawks, who also received a team-best eight rebounds out of Fatodd Lewis.
On Thursday, Morehead State (4-12, 0-5 OVC) put up a valiant fight before falling by a 78-75 margin at Southeast Missouri. AJ Hicks (21 points, team-high five assists) and De’von Cooper (15 points on five 3-pointers in 21 minutes) each established new career-highs in scoring while Lamontray Harris collected his third double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Eagle attack also boasts the sophomore duo of Jordan Walker (career-high 26 points in 21 minutes in last year’s overtime loss at UT Martin) and Londell King (OVC-best 10.0 rebounds per game in conference play).
