The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will travel to Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay for a midweek matchup on Wednesday, Jan. 3 to ring in the new year. Action will tipoff from the Dunn Center at 7 p.m.
The Skyhawks (5-9, 1-1 OVC) will hit the road for the first time during the conference season with a matchup at Austin Peay. In the Skyhawks most recent contest, they held a lead over defending OVC champion Belmont for nearly 39 minutes before allowing the Bruins to take their first and only lead of the contest with 47 seconds left to play, ultimately falling 65-63.
UT Martin is led offensively by three players averaging in double figures. Sophomore Kendall Spray leads the team and ranks fourth in the OVC with 16.8 points per game while ranking third nationally in three-point field goals per game (4.00), fourth in three-point field goals made (56), seventh in three-point field goals attempted (124) and 30th in three-point field goal percentage (45.2). Junior Emanye Robertson (12.8 ppg) is averaging 18.5 points per game in conference play while ranking in the top-10 OVC statistics in assists (4.2), free throw percentage (76.7 percent), steals (2.2) and assist/turnover ratio (1.3). Senior Janekia Mason comes in third with 10.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
Austin Peay (8-5, 1-1 OVC) recently snapped a four-game losing streak with a home victory over Eastern Illinois, 69-59. In the contest, the Govs relied on freshman guard Brianah Ferby to lead the way, scoring a career-high 19 points. The Govs are led offensively by the play of Keisha Gregory with 10.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game while Falon Baker is close behind with 10.1 points per game.
Wednesday’s contest will mark the 86th meeting between the two programs dating back to 1970 with Austin Peay holding a narrow 45-40 advantage. Both teams have split the last four matchups, while UT Martin has won 11 of the last 13 showdowns. Despite the lopsided recent history, the Skyhawks are looking for their first win in the Dunn Center since the 2014-15 season.
