MARTIN, Tenn. – Coming off its third win in its last four tries, the University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball squad rounds out its nonconference slate with a Friday, Dec. 22 matchup against the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is set for 7 p.m.
The Skyhawks (4-8) will go for their second victory in as many seasons over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. UT Martin generated a 73-68 road win last year in a contest that featured 11 lead changes and eight tie scores. In that game, the Skyhawks overcame a 38-37 halftime deficit thanks to strong performances by Fatodd Lewis (14 points, game-high eight rebounds) and Matthew Butler (13 points, including four 3-pointers).
In its last game, UT Martin dispatched Blue Mountain College by an 84-76 margin on Wednesday. The Skyhawks dialed up an impressive 56-16 advantage in points in the paint while placing four scorers in double figures. Lewis’ stat line of 25 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and six steals led the way for UT Martin, who also saw Butler (20 points), Terrence Parker (career-high 13 points) and Darius Thompson (12 points) have big scoring nights.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-13) is in the midst of a grueling 17-game stretch away from home to begin its 2017-18 campaign. The Golden Lions are searching for their first victory of the season after a 77-49 setback at No. 20 Cincinnati on Tuesday night. Travon Harper tallied team-highs of 16 points and eight rebounds while Martaveous McKnight chipped in 10 points for Arkansas-Pine Bluff, who shot 36 percent (18-of-50) for the contest.
McKnight has developed a reputation as one of the top backcourt options in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, as he has tallied three games with at least 25 points this season. That includes a career-best 30 points against North Dakota on Nov. 13 as part of the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii.
