The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will travel to West Lafayette, Ind. to close out the team’s non-conference slate with a three-game appearance in the Basketball Travelers Inc. Invitational over the next several days. The Skyhawks will battle Saint Mary’s College on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 1:30 p.m., tournament host Purdue on Monday, Dec. 18 at 5:30 p.m. and Eastern Washington on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at 10 a.m. – all times are CST.
The Skyhawks (4-5) enter the invitational looking to build upon the team’s recent dismantling of Rhodes College (90-49) in the team’s previous matchup after a 10-day hiatus from competition for finals. In the contest, UT Martin posted a handful of strong accomplishments highlighted by a dazzling shooting performance by sophomore Kendall Spray who set the program’s single-game three-point record with 11 made trifectas – ranking as a single-game high in the NCAA this season. Along with the three-point barrage, the Skyhawks notched 58 total rebounds which ranked as a single-game high for the program dating back to 2000 while limiting Rhodes to just 24.1 percent shooting from the floor, a single-game low by a Skyhawk opponent since 2010.
The duo of Kendall Spray and Chelsey Perry were recognized for their impressive week of performances by being named adidas OVC Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively. Spray enters the invitational leading the team and ranks third in the Ohio Valley Conference with 18.8 points per game. She also currently ranks first nationally in three-point field goals per game (4.67), second in three-point field goals made (42), 13th in three-point field goals attempted (86) and 21st in three-point field goal percentage (48.8). Perry is coming off a week where she nearly averaged a double-double with 12.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.
Saint Mary’s (5-3) is a 2017 Women’s NIT participant which enters the invitational looking to rebound from back-to-back loses to Utah and UC Davis in their previous matchups following a strong five-game winning streak. The Gaels boast three players in double figures with Megan McKay (15.6 ppg, 6.3 rpg), Sydney Raggio (14.9 ppg, 8.4 rpg) and Stella Beck (14.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg) leading the way.
Purdue (6-5) is a 2017 NCAA Tournament participant which enters the invitational having lost three of its last four contests. The Boilermakers will look to protect their home court behind the play of Andreona Keys (13.7 ppg, 5.5 rpg), Ae’Rianna Harris (13.0 ppg, 8.6 rpg) and Lamina Cooper (11.3 ppg, 4.0) ranking as the team’s top offensive threats.
Eastern Washington (4-5) is a 2017 Women’s Basketball Invitational participant which enters the field looking to build upon back-to-back victories. The Eagles are led by offensive powerhouse Delaney Hodgins who averages 19.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game while Violet Kapri Morrow also scores in double figures with 11.0 points per game.
UT Martin holds a combined 0-2 record against the three teams in the field. The Skyhawks will pair off against both Saint Mary’s and Eastern Washington for the first time in the BTI invitational while Purdue holds a 2-0 mark in both previous matchups.
